Misinfo[edit]

I removed the statement about Z. being the first Italian citizen to be awarded an honorary British knighthood. A look down the List of honorary British Knights shows at least the following preceded him:

Showing KBE[edit]

Average Earthman, I think the issue is not whether people like Zeffirelli are entitled to use KBE, because they are. It's whether Wikipedia Manual of Style says that's the style we use in our biographies. Being an Italian citizen, Z would not generally be called "Franco Zeffirelli KBE", so the shifting carpet of opinion seems to be saying that we don't show honorary postnominals. I agree...removed Arniep 01:42, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I'd misunderstood - I'd taken the deletion comment as meaning that non-UK citizens weren't entitled to call themselves by the KBE, rather than they don't tend to use them so we shouldn't either. Average Earthman 13:48, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gay rights issues[edit]

Someone should add the information about Zeffirelli's homosexuality and his paradoxal opposition to gay rights. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.46.22.195 (talk) 21:35, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He never opposed gay rights. He opposed what he considered the 'carnivalesque' side of the gay movement, that's different. Pro-life Zeffirelli ?[edit]

He' s listed among the pro-life celebrities, however there' s no information or external link whatsoever about his position on this subject. I believe he should be removed from the list, unless someone can provide a source.

If he's an MP from Forza Italia one would assume that he hews to a decidedly more conservative, traditional position on the subject, no?

Maestro Zeffirelli has time and time again stated his position and he is truly and firmly pro-life. It is very easy to find quotes if you just try. He states it in his biography[1], he has voted pro-life when he was an elected official in Italy[2]. He has talked about his views in newspaper articles[3]. His own mother's difficult decision to have him out of wedlock cemented his view. I'm almost certain the hardships she endured because of her decision resulted in his own determination to make her proud. She would have been proud I'm sure. Her decision gave us all an extraordinary artist who is also an masterful designer, architect, writer and politician. Having had the honor to actually meet the Maestro and spend time talking to him, I can say firsthand that he is very much pro-life. I can also say that he is a complex personality with a sincerely wonderful heart and spirit. This is a person who deeply values life and considers each day a gift from above.

But let us hear his own words shall we? I could have used any number of sources, but I do like this one. [4]

CONTE: You have always stated you are against abortion...

ZEFFIRELLI: Yes, always, and I'll explain to you why. In the afternoon, after school, I used to go with my friends to a recreational area run by Dominican friars in St. Mark's Square in Florence. We often played football in one of the monastery's large cloisters. One day, a fight broke out among us, and one of the boys chased me away using a particularly vivid expression insulting my mother's memory. My first reaction was to stop in my tracks petrified, then I began to cry. At a certain point, a man arrived, took hold of my hand and asked me to follow him. He led me to a painting - the Annunication by Fra Angelico - and explained to me that the Annunciation was more important than Christmas because in that moment God became man. Then he told me that I had been born thanks to my mother's courage. He went on, and I will never forget this, that a woman is never a sinner if she gives birth. That man was Giorgio La Pira, and shortly after he became Mayor of Florence. So you can see why I am anti-abortion, why I believe in life, the life of every living thing, in every situation and at whatever cost. Justright53 (talk) 17:01, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

F.Z. passed away in 2001, how could he possibly comment on Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.166.69.5 (talk) 18:25, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
