Paintings

Who determines which paintings are notable enough to be included on the list? I can think of several others I would add to the list. And wasn't a Molly Hatchet album cover by him as well? Noahbain

Any widely circulated painting should qualify. I think the Molly Hatchet covers you're thinking of are actually "Dark Kingdom" and "The Death Dealer." I don't know if he was commisioned by them to do those paintings or if he created them and they were adapted by them for their covers. He might've done others too, however; those are the only two I know of. Other covers for Hatchet were done by Boris Vallejo, whose style is similar to Frazetta's. — Frecklefoot | Talk 17:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

This article, particularly as it regards such an important figure in commercial art, is frankly a disgrace, being filled with hagiographic hype, POV, unsourced and uncited claims, original research, poor referencing, misformatting, and many, many other errors and policy/guideline violations. I've made a first pass at fixing some of the more egregious problems, and will ask fellow WikiProject: Comics editors to pitch in. Remove the "Citation need" Frank's museum is closed. The link to Frazetta's page says it all. Frank Jr runs the site. And significantly, it sounds like 70.113.49.126 is inadvertently pointing out a severe copyvio issues. I don't have the books he mentions, so I can't say; I'm just going by "The article reads almost word for word from the Frazetta books by Spectrum." Painting

Would it be more appropriate to have the painting at the top and his photo later. I think more people coming to the page are interested in his painting style.

Where are the images of his paintings?! For an entry about an artist its lacking considerably in images of his work. Only a single cover of a modern repurposing of his artwork on an album?! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.98.1.226 (talk • contribs)

There are numerous copyright issues to deal with. Some could be considered fair use, but even the album cover teeters on non-fair use because it is used in this article, which is not about the album. If you want more images, dive into the murkey depths of the copyright issues to try and get them in here. You'll probably have to scan the images of the paintings yourself, as we can't just lift them from other sites. — Frecklefoot | Talk 15:35, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

That's actually not true. If a website has an image of a painting, and we have a fair-use claim to that painting, we can use the image from that site. Scanning, copying, and photographing a work does not constitute making a derivative work, and as such, the web-site operator (or photographer, or scanner, or whoever) does not have any copyright claim on the piece. Only the original copyright stands. However, as it is, the album cover (used here) explicitly fails Wikipedia's fair-use policy (an album cover can only be fairly-used to illustrate the audio recording in question). And while I do think it'd be great to have example images, as they might be helpful and illustrative, we simply can't violate copyright law to do it. It's not like we post a full copy of MS Office in the article Microsoft Office, nor do we put up mp3s of all the hits at Rolling Stones. In the latter case, yes, we can sometimes use short audio clips, but only to accompany the article about the recording in question - we couldn't use Paint it Black in the article guitar just because it features a guitar. --Cheeser1 (talk) 08:31, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

"Frazetta attributes much of the violence and brutality of these paintings to his actual experiences as a young man defending himself from the street gangs of Brooklyn,[2] who most likely unwisely targeted a man who in all probability traveled with a baseball bat.[3]" -- second half of this sentence is about as vague and ungrammatical as you could hope for, but neither half of the sentence is actually supported by the citations. There is an "official UN-official Frazetta" site run by a fan, and the quazi-official Frazetta site run by Frank Jr which is separate from the OFFICIAL Frazetta site run by Ellie (RIP) and Frank Jr prior to her death (and the current troubles). Frank Sr. has never prosecuted anyone for DISPLAYING his work, as long as he got the credit. So until the courts settle who actually owns the paintings (Frank Jr or the family at large)assume Frank Sr. is okay with displaying his images, since it would ultimately lead to more sales of prints and books and videos, which is what he wants. Now, if and when Frank Sr. dies or his power of atty is settled, then things will change. Looks confirmed - ComicsBeat.com talked to his agent. Not controversial, he'd been sick for ages. I past-tensed the last section, the rest needs going over, particularly when the proper obituaries come in. Why are there comments that this site is defunct/down? It's not, and it's running just fine, it was even updated today (regarding his death).

Both "Frank Frazetta gallery at American Art Archives (fan site)" and "Frank Frazetta gallery at Museum Syndicate" haven't been updated, and the galleries are less complete, not to mention a bit troubling to navigate...

I'm re-adding frankfrazetta.org to the External Links until someone can give me a good reason as to why I shouldn't. 4.167.169.227 (talk) 07:20, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

See also

What exactly is the criteria for the "See also" list in this article? It appears to be just a random bunch of comics artist and commercial illustrators. If that's the case, we could list a hundred more names. Why, specifically, are each of them here? What's their relationship to Frazetta, if any? --Tenebrae (talk) 21:38, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

There is no real criteria. I assume they are either (a) artists who were inspired by Frazetta, or (b) artists who have art styles similar to Frazetta. Influenced

Nightscream just added Art Adams as an artist influenced by Frazetta. While Adams is a recognized artist, Frazetta was a very recognized artist and influenced hundreds if not thousands of other artists, some very recognized. I think it's biased to list just a few (or, in this case, just one). I'd have to go along with you about singling out Adams, though Nightscream is a pretty savvy editor so I hope he'll weigh in your larger point: Frazetta has influenced dozens and dozens of artists, if not more, and there doesn't seem much point in trying to list every one. And otherwise, what's our criteria for including the three or four that we do?

Maybe we can find some art historian's quote about "Frazetta had influenced a generation of fantasy artists for his blah-blah-clah style of such-and-such, which has seeped into a wide variety of works from 'this and so' poster art to 'that and such' album cover."
