Frances Eliot Fremont-Smith[edit]

"He was married to Frances Eliot Fremont-Smith" (FEF-S)

Our source, the 2007 NYT obituary of son Eliot [1], actually says: "Born in Cambridge, Mass., in 1929, Mr. [Eliot] Fremont-Smith was the youngest of three sons born to Frank Fremont-Smith and Frances Hopkinson Fremont-Smith." Eliot seems likely, or "FEF-S". ...

Probably FEF-S is the illustrator of at least one children's book

  • (WorldCat record). The House on the Edge of Things, Ethel Cook Eliot, The Beacon Press, 1923; "Fairy tales"

There was a capsule review of that book in The Hartford Courant, 1923-11-25, pg. 5B (found via ProQuest Historical Newspapers). "Miss Eliot's ... is an unusually piquant and imaginative fairy tale ... the illustrations, which are in full color, and also in black-and-white, are extremely decorative, and exactly fit the spirit of the story itself."

"Ethel Cook Eliot" may be a relative, even her sister I suppose. [see below]

Frances Eliot Fremont-Smith is not similarly identified by LC (no LCCN). FEF-S is named only once (for the book above) in the browse report for Miss Eliot, 22 hits, but more may show up if other records are opened.

Elsewhere we say of writer Winslow Eliot aka Ellie Winslow, born 1956, that her grandmother Ethel Cook Eliot wrote children's books, Winslow Eliot#Background. Probably ECE is the missing link betw Charles W. Eliot b. 1834 -- Samuel A. Eliot (minister) -- ??? -- Alexander Eliot -- Winslow Eliot. We have Samuel Atkins Eliot, Jr. but neither biog of SAE names children or siblings.
Now I cross-post at Talk:Samuel A. Eliot (minister) and Talk:Samuel Atkins Eliot, Jr.. --P64 (talk) 02:47, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes to the missing link. ECE was "the wife of Samuel A. Eliot, Jr. of Smith College", mother of Alexander and Torka --per a review of The Wind Boy (Sep 1923) published The Forum 71.3 (March 1924), p413. --P64 (talk) 20:27, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
