Scrabo Tower[edit]

The 4th Marquess, son of his father's first wife, seems to have been the main instigator for the building of the Scrabo Tower as a momument for his father in Ireland, whereas his father's widow (his 2nd wife) drove the project of building a competing momument in Durham, England. There is no hard evidence for the decisive role played by the 4th Marquis. He seems to hide behind the committee where other members of the local gentry (Sir Robert Bateson) or nobility play the honorary roles. There is however his portrait with the tower in the background. His presence at the laying of the foundation stone and the absence of his stepmother at this ceremony seem to point to some lack of collaboration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johannes Schade (talkcontribs) 13:33, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
