Meaning

[edit]

The introductory line has it ass backwards. The Old German 'fridu' (meaning 'peace' in English) is part of many composite names like Friedrich, Friedbert, Friedlinde, but also Alfred, Manfred. As a surname this usually means the family decended from someone with such a name. Then there were Jewish people with family names like Solomon or Sholem (derived from the Hebrew word for 'peace') who chose or were given a new surname according to translation into German. -- 2003:E5:171F:44E0:61DD:6FEA:570D:B054 (talk) 11:20, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
