Should we include a narrative of the floods?[edit]

Tropical Storm Claudette hit the area in late July 1979. Our home just outside Friendswood got two and a half feet of water. A few homes within Friendswood that were closer to Clear Creek got eight feet or even over the roofs. This is what I remember and I’m being cautious, it may have been more than a few homes being flooded this badly. Even for homes only “slightly” flooded, it’s tearing out sheetrock and insulation, which soaks up water like a sponge, and it’s thousands and thousands of dollars worth of damage. The event was classified as something like a hundred or five hundred year flood.

There was a second flood, not as big and not near as well remembered, a scant two months later. Yes, it was smaller, but absolutely devasting to the families who already started rebuilding.

Within the next couple of years, Clear Creek was channelized (I think by the army corp of engineers). Mainly, a lot of trees and brush were cut down along both shores. (I believe the current method is more to build or leave aside large retention areas.)

(I lived away for a time so I may not be listing all the floods. There was a pretty big flood in Houston around October, 1994, but I’m not sure if it hit Friendswood or not.)

Then of course, there was the Flood of June 2001, which definitely did hit Friendswood.

All of this I tend to think should be included. It illustrates that Houston truly is the Bayou City. The terrain is very flat, thank you very much. And when a storm system stalls over ground that’s already saturated, yeah, things can happen. And the floods are very much a part of the human story of Friendswood, Texas. 206.106.1.104 00:57, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
