Town/village discussion[edit]

FAO @TheSmashingBlumpkins, @Simon Burchell, @2a02:c7c:d01a:de00:9590:557d:65b5:1e71, @2A02:C7C:D01A:DE00:A488:5DF0:7873:A21B

There have been a number of edits and reversions of this article's lead recently, changing the description of Frimley between being a "town" and a "village". It seems that there are sources that support both views, and as these are slightly fuzzily-defined categories there may never be a definitive single correct answer.

Can I suggest we attempt to reach a consensus of how to handle this before any further edits?

I propose adding the following to the article's History section, or elsewhere if you've a better suggestion:

Frimley is an electoral ward of the Borough of Surrey Heath.[1] It is sometimes referred to as a town,[2][3] and sometimes as a village.[4][5]

This would enable a lead (with citations in the body as suggested by MOS:LEADCITE) that says the following:

Frimley is a settlement and electoral ward in the Borough of Surrey Heath in Surrey, England, approximately 30 mi (48 km) southwest of central London.

Your views welcome.

  • Scanning through the article history, the very first incarnation in 2005 said "small town/village", but this was quickly changed to town.[1] This looks to have been stable until this edit in June 2022, with a edit summary AFAICS not backed up by a source,[2] and which was subsequently reverted. Town remained until a few weeks ago then was changed to village [3] by the same editor who made the June 2022 change. Recently, to and fro reversions with sources. Notifying @DragonofBatley who is also involved. To summarise, we have one editor insisting it's a village against 3 or 4 editors saying it's a town. We have an article that's existed for 18 years and for all that time bar short-lived changes, Frimley in its current state has been described as a town.
On to sources. However Frimley is described, sources should be the deciding factor and different weightings apply. Sources 3 and 4 are local whereas sources 2 and 3 are national. Source 1 verifies the ward. Surrey County Council use town [4], a more up-to-date source than the 2002 road order. The ONS categorises Frimley as a small town based on population.[5] and the Ordnance Survey categorises Frimley as a town.[6]
Recommendation. Unless stronger sources are put up to support the "village" case, the weight of evidence appears to favour Frimley as a small town so that is what the lead and other instances throughout the article should state. Village seems to be a local view best reflected in a note and confined to mentions in the History section. (Wendover is an example.) Rupples (talk) 04:36, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very quickly, before I head out for the evening: the newly published Surrey Pevsner (Buildings of England) says: "Fifty years ago a small old village on the Hampshire border but now a small and architecturally unremarkable town."
