Bastian's full name and correct spelling ("Bastian", not "Bastain") are from his WWI draft card, available on ancestry.com (subscription required), and from the 1900-1930 US Census reports (same site).

The Indiana University site once had a page listing its Big Ten tennis champions. It is now deleted but still available via Google cache. The relevant content was:

Big Ten Team Champions 1921 - Big Ten Co-Champions (tied with Chicago) In 1921, Frederick “Fritz” Bastian of Indianapolis introduced Indiana men’s tennis to the national spotlight. After finishing as the Big Ten runner-up in singles as a junior, Bastian set out his senior year to claim the conference title. After defeating his brother, Dick who played for Butler, for the state college title, Fritz stormed through conference competition, bringing the Hoosiers the 1921 Big Ten Championship. The Hoosiers were forced to share that championship, however, when the University of Chicago captured the doubles championship. At that time the Big Ten champion was given to the team that swept singles and doubles titles. Since Indiana and Chicago split the titles, the two were named co-champions. Bastian then went on to represent Indiana in the National Intercollegiate Championships at Merion Cricket Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The tournament featured 68 players from 21 colleges. Bastian became Indiana’s only national champion in men’s tennis after defeating Carl Fischer of Penn State in straight sets in the championship match. In 1921, the men’s tennis and the wrestling squads both claimed the conference championship which marked the first time in IU history that two teams won a conference championship in the same academic year. During the championship season, only Bastian and senior Bruce DeMarcus were awarded varsity letters.
