First Sentence[edit]

"Furmint is a white Hungarian wine grape variety that is most noted widely grown in the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region where it is used to produce single-varietal dry wines as well as being the principal grape in the better known Tokaji dessert wines."

Synonyms[edit]

I've removed the VIVC reference [1] from the Synonyms section as there are several listed on that page which have been proven wrong (of immediate concern is that Pošip is not a synonym of Furmint). Let's rebuild the Synonym list from a source that doesn't lump every smaller production white wine grape as being Furmint. Primecoordinator (talk) 02:00, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vitis International Variety Catalogue is the prime international ampelographic database, and you have not given any references to the claim that it is wrong. Wikipedia is built on reliable sources. You seem to have misunderstood the fact that there are many overlapping synonyms for grape varieties. Pošip (alone or followed by a suffix) is the synonym or proper name of several grape varieties. If there is a risk of misunderstanding on the part of the reader in some cases, this can of course be pointed out in the list. E.g. "(also a synonym of...)" or "(also the proper name of a grape variety)". Tomas e (talk) 13:26, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, it may be a valued resource, but you've misunderstood how grape names change via language and regional shifts. While Žilavka is listed [2] it's also the case that it's shown here [3] having no relation to Furmint. And, if you do a search on "posip" (VIVC doesn't appear to support diacritics which is just dumb) you see that sure, if can be Furmint, but it can also be any number of other wines including separate wines in Italy and former Yugoslavia that have nothing to do with the Hungarian grape. This synonym list is garbage as it is and needs to be honed down to a core list that is verified and country-typed as due to this being WP, people quote this source without understanding just how inaccurate it is. I'm pulling the list again until a properly constructed list is created that qualified each of these synonyms instead of just lumping them all in to a "pile of white grapes" group. Comment VIVC is one of the most valuable and comprehensive data bank on wine grape varieties. Yes, synonyms change and can be applied to multiple grapes. It is our job as an encyclopedia to try and keep up on that which is why we have disambig page on many synonyms (several of which can be found here). Every fully developed wine grape article should have a section on synonyms, otherwise we get confusion like this due to the fact that we commonly create redirects for synonyms. If you have a disagreement about a particular synonyms then it is fine to have a discussion about that synonym and may be even create a disambig page for it. Put removing the whole list is just silly like the old cliche of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Agne ^Cheese/^Wine 19:38, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also note that grape varieties are commonly misidentified as other varieties and have been throughout history. While Žilavka and Pošip bijeli are separate grape varieties, reliable sources like Wine Grapes note that they are commonly mistaken for Furmint. So we should still keep those varieties listed in the synonym section of Furmint (and ideally in text in the Confusion with other grapes section) but with the names redirected to the main article on the grapes varieties themselves and a dab link or text comment about Furmint.
