The article needs to be cleaned up a bit, there are minor but noticable syntax errors. Also, who founded the city? Who was it named after?

Improvements needed[edit]

Please list improvements needed here:

  • Information about the Frank Buck Zoo
  • Clean up the "Things of note section" (for example, is the outlet mall still open?)
  • Information on the flood of 1981
  • Who founded Gainesville, Who was it named after, other basic historical facts of interest.
  • Camp Sweeney's wikipedia page claims it *is* in gainesville, so we should add that info back in.

NPOV Problems[edit]

This should be a no-brainer, but who considers it impressive? Too many instances of the word impressive in an encyclopedia article.

Gainesville is home to an impressive courthouse with an octagonal rotunda topped by stained glass, erected in 1910, and under renovation since late 2005. The courthouse grounds feature one of the most impressive Confederate soldier memorials in Texas, erected in the early 20th century by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), topped by a Confederate soldier facing northward, and bearing a poetic inscription honoring the Southland's fallen heroes. Other memorials on the courthouse grounds honor veterans of other U.S. wars.

This NPOV comment is premature. Many of the courthouses of Texas are impressive, especially those built between the early days of the Republic (1835) and 1929. I have seen the responses of visitors to the United States viewing an older Texas courthouse for the first time. They were impressed.
While another adjective could be chosen to describe the courthouse, this use of "impressive" is not sufficient to brand this article NPOV. The editor needs to provide proof that the courthouse in Gainesville is not impressive. F3meyer

Here is a book that I have read that may help with the section on history. Tainted Breeze, subtitled-The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Texas 1862, written by Richard B. McCaslin. It is a bit of a dry read, however it is very informative.Jmpssp35 (talk) 17:27, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some Changes[edit]

Why are we talking about the impressive courthouse? Every city has an impressive court house. And by the way, Camp Sweeney is not in Gainesville. It's not even close to Gainesville.


who ever wrote this is an idiot because Camp Sweeney is only 10 miles from Gainesville.. how can you say that it is not even close? Also, not every city has an impressive court house, only county seats.. And if you would like to see an unimpressive courthouse drive to Bowie or Decatur, and you will get more appreciation for Gainesville's courthouse.. Get a life man, and quit nit picking.. Um. Well that IS a very impressive courthouse, and not every county seat has impressive courthouses...some have average court houses and even boring court houses. I like the statue and the pigeons and the clock tower and the surrounding cobblestone streets and on the north end the street is a 4 lane street. And if Camp Sweeney has a Gainesville address, then it is IN gainesville, even if it is outside of city limits. I know that sounds confusing.........

Rewriting And Expanding This Article[edit]

Gainesville article does not even have a history section!!!!!!!! and also it does not have a section on economy!!!!!!! This should clean the "Things Of Note" section quite nicely. I will be working on all of this.

Notable people section[edit]

I removed Cody Hart and Konny Reimann from the notable people section because they do not meet notability guidelines as they do not have their own Wikipedia aricles. I listed the information I removed in the event an editor creates a Wikipedia article for either. "Cody Hart, professional bull rider, 1999 Professional Bull Riders world champion" "*Konny Reimann, German immigrant, moved in 2004 with his family to Gainesville, responsible for a high publicity of Gainesville in Germany because his emigration is until today followed by a German TV-Station, e. g. in the TV-Show Goodbye Deutschland! Sorry, I don't know if Konny Reimann is famous in Gainesville or not but in Germany he is a "little" TV-Star and famous. In the German Wikipedia-Article [[1]] you can see a picture of Konny Reimann and if you insert the words "Konny Reimann" e. g. on youtube you will see a lot of clips of Konny, filmed by a german TV-Station in Gainesville! And if you insert the words to google, you will get over 100.000 results. In the German Wikipedia-Article [2] of Gainesville there is a section about the TV-Show and Konny Reimann. So I think he is notable. And I think it is interesting for the people of Gainesville to know that there lives a famous person in their area who they know as a "normal" person and not as a famous person.--Kritischer Geist (talk) 18:22, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I really appreciate the information you provided on Konny Reismann. I was not aware of his significance in Germany. I removed him from the Notable people section because he does not have a Wikipedia article which is needed to establish his notability in Wikipedia. Nothing on the circus? You must be kidding[edit]

The most interesting (or to put it frankly: only interesting) thing about Gainesville is surely their amazong Gainesville Community Circus that was active from 1930 until the late 1950s. An article on the town with a history section that does not even mention the word "circus" once is little more than a joke. The Great Hanging Needs Work[edit]

Eventually someone is going to have to insert information about the great hanging that has more to do with historic fact and not a contempt for "the north". As of today, the article is written in a smug tone completely dismissing every other available fact regarding an assembled mob, the presence of a cache of weapons, etc, that I am able to locate.69.92.114.2 (talk) 16:04, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
