some notes on the new material[edit]

Despite Mike Tanier's claim to the contrary, there is no "universal" gap labeling and numbering convention. Even his article has the 2 technique where others would call it 2i. Pro Football Focus, for reasons only they understand, call a 5 tech face on a tackle when no one else does. Ron Vanderlinden explains the common gap naming before using his own. The Inside the Pylon content, which I use for many line positions, has issues with their 1 tech material as the players they use as an example are in 2i position, shaded on the guard, not the center.

One confusing facet of all this is that players in certain defensive line positions get their play named for the position. So people talk about a "5 tech" as if saying so embodies all the play and techniques of someone at that position (defensive end), even when the base 3-4 ends are usually in 4 technique. And further, these "5 techs" can end up in a Bear front, where the 3-4 defensive ends end up in the 3 position. Dwmyers (talk) 14:18, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So folks understand what we actually are following here, the convention used in the Dan Durkin article is being followed in my wiki additions.
