Failed GA

This article definitely needs work before it can make GA status. The lead is only one sentence and does not adequately summarize the article. The article is insufficiently referenced. The single covers are decorative and don't meet WP:FU, possibly the album covers as well. The personal life section is only one sentence. There's a trivia section and quote farm. It looks like the Youtube links are copyright violations. The promotional image in the infobox is replaceable, as is the screenshot. ShadowHalo 04:20, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, will see how the article can be improved. Cheers, Jacklee 14:10, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
  1. The introductory paragraph has been rewritten.
  2. The "Trivia" and "Quotations" sections have been removed, and their contents integrated into the rest of the article.
  3. The "Personal life" section has been beefed up slightly.
  4. I think the referencing of the article is adequate.
  5. I don't think the screenshot is replaceable. See the comments on the image's Talk page.

Letters requesting permission to use images and to link to YouTube videos

I sent the following e-mails to the Believer Music Group today, requesting for permission to use the images in this article, and for confirmation as to whether the videos that the article links to were uploaded on to YouTube in breach of copyright. Cheers, Jacklee 17:26, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

I am a volunteer editor of Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org), a multilingual project to create a complete, accurate, and open-content encyclopedia. As you may already know, volunteers from around the world collaboratively edit Wikipedia, which is one of many projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation ( http://wikimediafoundation.org). We depend on photography, art, diagrams and charts to clearly illustrate our articles.

I recently created an entry on Wikipedia about one of your artists, Garðar Thór Cortes ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garðar_Thór_Cortes), which makes use of photographs and album cover art from the website http://www.cortes.is . I was under the impression that use of such images amounted to fair use under the copyright laws of the US and of other jurisdictions, where applicable. However, I have been informed that this may not be the case.

I am therefore writing to you to find out if you are willing to grant permission for the images currently shown in the above Wikipedia article to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation Licence (GNU-FDL, or GFDL for short). This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of these images, you are granting permission for others to use, copy, and share the images freely, and even potentially use them commercially, so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g., "share-alike"). You can read this licence in full at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License. We choose the GFDL because we consider it the best available tool for ensuring our encyclopedia can remain free for all to use, while providing credit to everyone who donates text and images.

If you do agree to grant permission for use, we will credit you, state that the photographs are your work (or that the copyright is owned by you) and are used with your permission, and provide a link to the website http://www.cortes.is.

I hope you will consider agreeing to our request, and look forward to hearing from you on the matter.

Regards,
Jack Lee

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

Further to the e-mail sent earlier today, the Wikipedia article on the artist Garðar Thór Cortes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garðar_Thór_Cortes) contains the links to videos featuring Cortes that are available on YouTube:

It is not Wikipedia's policy to link to content that may be in breach of copyright. I would therefore be grateful if you could confirm whether the videos referred to above were uploaded on to YouTube by you or with your consent. If not, I will remove the links from the Wikipedia article to these videos.

I look forward to hearing from you on the matter.

Regards,
Jack Lee

Have received a response from Cortes' agent about the use of images; have sent another e-mail seeking clarifications.

Hello, Scott,

Thanks very much for your reply, and the attached images. Can I just get you to confirm the following:

Finally, are the videos on YouTube that are linked to in the Garðar Thór Cortes Wikipedia article in breach of copyright? If not, we would like to continue linking to them. Otherwise, we will remove the links.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
Jack Lee

Hi Jack

Here are some new images of Cortes, please let me know if you need anything you need and we are only help to you.

On 25 May 2007, Cortes' agent, Believer Music Group, provided permission under the terms of the GFDL for six images provided by it to be used on Wikipedia. I've uploaded these to the Wikimedia Commons. Cheers, Jacklee 23:14, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Photograph of Garðar Thór Cortes

The photograph of Garðar Thór Cortes that was originally in the infobox has been determined to be replaceable and thus deleted. A suitable replacement photograph that complies with Wikipedia's fair use policy would be welcome. Cheers, Jacklee 02:48, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Cortes' agent, Believer Music Group, have given permission for certain images to be used on Wikipedia (see the note above), and I've included two of them in the article. Cheers, Jacklee 23:14, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Pronunciation of Cortes's name

I've added the pronunciation of Cortes's name using the International Phonetic Alphabet based on the way Cortes says it, but as I don't speak Icelandic, I would be grateful if someone who does has a look at it and confirms if it is accurate. Cheers, Jacklee 18:41, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Haukurth, for updating the pronunciation. Cheers, Jacklee 12:34, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
