Passed away?[edit]

Strongest confirmation I've seen of this right now is a tweet from a local journalist who interviewed him last week [1]. Anyone got anything more in conformance with WP:RS? Thanks, quant18 (talk) 14:23, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did he re-acquire US citizenship?[edit]

He relinquished his US citizenship in 1948, but then he lived and worked in the USA for decades? Was he a stateless person in the USA or he re-acquired the US citizenship at one point? How could he consider running for government posts if he was stateless? Did he pay taxes?[edit]

That is the real question, no? If he lived in the "U.S." after renouncing his "citizenship" and did not pay taxes, then 100,000,000 others would like to follow in his footsteps.

Some questionable claims[edit]

I am having great difficulty coming up with reliable sources for a lot of the text that appears in this article, and have drawn something of a blank. The majority of claims appear in only one group of sources — those that are directly written by Davis himself, or published by his personal organisations. Some are not supported "out of universe" with respect to Davis' movement by any external sources. For example:

  1. Davis is claimed to have been a "Broadway actor" at some point in his early history. The only sources that say that he was a Broadway actor are published by the World Government of World Citizens and its various divisions. None of these ever list any roles that he played, any productions that he was in, any directors he worked under, or give any indication of the timeframe in which he was a Broadway actor. No press reviews of Broadway productions, as far as I can research, mention Davis. This claim is therefore either fictitious or inflated and needs to be indicated as a claim rather than a fact.
  2. He was allegedly able to enter foreign countries using his World Passport. Which countries, and when? The World Government of World Citizens website is extremely vague about this, aggregating all alleged acceptances of the World Passport into one huge list without referencing specific examples, dates or the context of the admission by the appropriate authorities of the given nations. Are some of these Davis' entries into these countries? If so, which ones? Are there any reliable sources to prove it?
  3. How did he renounce his American citizenship and work in the US until the end of his life? Indeed, did he renounce his US citizenship? If so, when, and where is it stated in a reliable source?

2. He was allegedly able to enter foreign countries using his World Passport. Which countries, and when? Seems like most of the time he used a 1954 Convention certificate of identity instead. In 1975[1] he'd been imprisoned more than 20 times for crossing frontiers with travel documents printed by his own organization and that he'd just served a 20-day sentence in Switzerland for that reason. Also In practice, Davis does not always rely on the passport he issued himself to get about. He uses it to make a point as often as he can. To travel from France to England, for example, he makes use of a regularly-issued stateless person's passport, which is issued by the United Nations.[2] And another source says Davis tried to enter Israel with one of his passports last June, but didn't make it past the customs gate. This time, he came with a U.N. stateless persons document, and the Israelis let him in.[3]
3. How did he renounce his American citizenship and work in the US until the end of his life? Indeed, did he renounce his US citizenship? If so, when, and where is it stated in a reliable source? The New York Times obituary cited elsewhere in the article: On May 25, 1948, a former United States Army flier entered the American Embassy in Paris, renounced his American citizenship and, as astonished officials looked on, declared himself a citizen of the world. The DC District Court affirmed[4] that what Davis did was a voluntary renunciation under Section 401(f) of the Nationality Act of 1940 (what's now 8 U.S.C. § 1481(a)(5)), that Davis could not "recant" that, and thus he was a non-citizen who could be deported from the US. The judge suggested that if Davis wanted to stay he should get his parents or siblings to sponsor him for a green card.
Though I've never seen Wp:RS confirmation, I'm guessing Davis indeed went ahead and got that green card again. There's no record of him trying to get a private bill to restore his citizenship the way Hope Cooke did, for example. OTOH the US government might have given up on deporting Davis because there was no other country which would accept him. They had to give up on deporting Vietnam War protestor Thomas Jolley for that reason.
