Rewrite + expansion + sourcing[edit]

I have just rewritten the article completely, corrected a number of errors, added a lot of new material, and sourced it. I still think it has a long way to go. In particular, the following basic factual matters are open questions that we need to resolve:

  • Gary's birth year. It was stated as 1938 in this article, probably based on AllMusic Guide, but his own statements seem to indicate that it was later. Though people are known to fib about age, I see no basis for the 1938 date and am inclined to believe it may just be wrong. Gary's statements would indicate 1940 or 1941 as more probable.
Gary's birthday is in facy May 18, 1938. It is on the same day as his new wife Vicki's. Gary's birthday has always been shrouded in doubt, but after talking with Vicki and Gary, I can assure you that this one is correct.
Okay, good. Glad we have that one straight. Birth years are a pain!
  • Gary's birthplace. AllMusic Guide has it as Mesa, AZ, as originally stated in this article, but all researches indicate that this is wrong. Paxton himself, and every source connected to him, have it as Coffeyville, KS. I have changed it for this reason, but there is still a cloud of doubt here.
Gary was born in Mesa, AZ, however, he was not raised by his parents. He was moved to Coffeyville, KS when he was 3 years old by his grandparents. Gary soon left there as soon as he was old enough and headed out to California.
Thanks; I've changed the sentence to include this information.
  • What is the exact title of his second gospel album? Sources differ, and images are unclear.
  • What is the exact year of release of his third gospel album? Sources differ.
  • What is up with these 1965 and 1966 engineering Grammy nominations claimed in the previous version of the article? Well, no, that's not the question. They're clearly based on the claimed nominations in the scanned Paxton biography from his first gospel album, as seen here: An Incomplete History of Gary S. Paxton. But I looked around, and he doesn't seem to have been involved with any Grammy nominations in those years. Was the author of the album notes simply mistaken?
Gary did in fact win nominations in those years. I agree that the references are few and far in between. Gary was involved with Tommy Roe and produced/recorded Sweet Pea, as well as The Association's, Along Came Mary. These songs did in fact give 2 noms for Gary. This was per a call to the Grammy offices for confirmation.
Sounds good to me. I couldn't find any info, but the available sources weren't much good anyway, and the Grammy offices sound a lot better to me!
  • When the Blackwood Boys received a Grammy in 1973, was it for the song called "L-O-V-E", as written and produced by Gary S. Paxton, or a song called "Release Me"? Are they possibly the same song? Different sources claim one song or the other.
The Blackwoods won the Grammy for L-O-V-E in 1972. This info can be found here [1]. The entire album was written and produced by Gary. "Release Me" was a follow up and received the Grammy in 1973. Both songs were from the same album, just different release dates. Release Me also received a nom for Song of the Year 1973, but lost in that catagory.
Gotcha - thanks so much for the info. The available sources seemed to conflict, but like I said, they weren't so hot.

Gary is a very interesting soul that is for sure. He has always lived his life in the private sector and finding information on his is like pulling teeth. When I orginally put this article together I became very frustrated at the lack of info on his history. Imagine that with me being an historian? Anyway, I personally know Gary and Vicki and I tried to find sources that they would give me to see if Ithey could be used. Unfortunatley, most of them were dead end references. So, we are stuck with what we have. HIs stories however are priceless and I do have his discography and will post it once I get to my offices. I hope this was of some help to you.
