A few corrections[edit]

I changed a few things in this excellent article. First, the 25th VA Inf. was not formally organized until Gen. Garnett took over. The other changes were to reflect a little more accurately what Porterfield was able to do. Granville D. Hall's book, and the other early 20th Cent. histories can be rather inaccurate, particularly Hall's books, as he was a member of the Wheeling Conventions and tended to exaggerate. As J.G. Randall said in "Constitutional Problems Under Lincoln", the books by Parker, Hall, William P. Willey, and Virgil Lewis (the first WV State Historian) "should be used with caution." Thanks. The statement about the 25th Virginia Infantry that I in turn used for my remark about it did seem a little odd. It referred to a date before the transfer of Virginia forces to the Confederacy and many Virginia companies were not part of regiments before the transfer and, I think, if regiments existed as part of the Virginia pre-Confederate forces, some or all of them may not have had numerical designations. To the extent I thought any more about it, I think I supposed that it was either a unit that became the 25th or it was a state designation that carried over. Either way, I didn't write it that precisely, even though I have done so about another early Virginia unit. The more accurate the better. You are welcome. Wikipedia is not completely rigid on formatting of references and what to include but there are some minimum requirements (which you met, of course) and some other suggestions. I try to follow the Chicago Manual of style as explained by User:Hlj/CWbibliography, to the extent I understand it. There is a tweak or two about retrieval dates which should not be necessary for online books but some Wikipedia people seem to think they should be included even for books so I try to include dates. Also, it is easy to miss some of the coding or fine points. I had to correct one of my own citations and add it to the references as well.

Confirming the availability and uploading photos is a tough task for me (no real experience) so I am glad you have one and can put it in the article. I am trying to add or expand articles about people and events from the Civil War as we pass the 150th anniversaries. Porterfield is an important character from the early period of the war and his Mexican War experience is another notable factor. I noticed that the Battle of Philippi was covered but there was no article on the Confederate commander and major figure, possibly because he was not a general and did not become one. The big battles and topics are reasonably well covered although a few could use a little work. The articles for some of the other events and people are still missing or are stubs. I have started a draft article for James Barbour Terrill but I need to add a little more before I put in on line. He was not confirmed as a general until the day after he died which reduces the information on him a little and probably has reduced enthusiasm about writing an article on him. I should have added that if you click on the shortened form of the google book URL (basically up to the first &) that I used, the google page with a small picture or icon of the book, along with related books, will appear. If you click on the book picture or icon, the book, or such part of it as can be previewed, will appear. That may not be entirely obvious from the google introduction pages. On some of the pages, there may not be a clear indication that book is available in whole or in part right there on the google site, much less any instruction to click on the picture.
