What number mayor?[edit]

The article had McClellan listed as the 96th mayor, which an editor changed to 91st. I asked the editor on his talk page what his source was, but he did not answer, however his latest edit summary said he was counting backwards from the current mayor. Unfortunately, both numbers are wrong. Although 96 agreed with our List of mayors of New York City, that list used a unique counting system amounted to original research and which did not comport with the city's official numbering, which the articles on all other mayors since the city's consolidation use. According the city, at "Elected Mayors of New York City: 1898-1998", McClellan was the 93rd mayor. Because this is an extremely reliable source, and official as well, I have altered the number to 93, and have brought the List into line with the city's official numbering system as well. An even better official source, the city's "Green Book": http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/features/greenbook_mayors.shtml I think everthing's corrected now, thanks to User:Michael5046, the editor I mentioned above, who went out of his way to correct the number in other articles. A couple of years ago, there was an editor who was extremely zealous about taking numbers off lists where he (or she) thought them unjustified. During discussions at a Manual of Style talk page, I foolishly listed as counter-examples to that editor's proposed policy a number of tables on which I'd worked, many of them about New York City; this prompted that editor to rework almost all those tables according to his or her best lights (for example, the article on Borough President lost all the numberings for individual borough presidents). I think if you look at the List of New York City mayors from a few years ago (by using the article's edit history), the numbering it should follow more closely the generally-accepted convention, if there is one. (I made no corrections at the time because my own knowledge and sources weren't sufficient to assert a different system of numbering.) —— Shakescene (talk) 10:40, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the background. I've corrected the list of mayors according to the city's official numbering. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
