Vanity edit?[edit]

Do any other editors have comments on the fact that this article was totally rewritten by the subject's daughter, without prior discussion? El Ingles (talk) 15:31, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortatunly that is a rather serious conflict of interest. The user Drharrietd appears to be Harriet Devine - i.e. George Devine's daughter. She effecitvely identifes herself here [1]. The relevant Wikipedia policy is WP:COS which is pretty clear in that editors shouldn't write about themselves or family members. I know this can be incredibly frustrating for some editors who'd like to contribute balanced information (although you are allowed to remove defamation or serious error), but such edits undermine Wikipedia's neutrality regardless how benign or reasonable the edits appear to be. Having said that, the article doesn't come across as biased. An equally serious problem is the lack in inline references. I'm going to have a go at that and see if that improves things. Thank you Seaweed. I agree that Harriet's version is not particularly objectionable, other than the WP:COS policy issue. Dear Stu and Seaweed. I have only just seen this discussion. Unfortunately I was unaware of the Wikipedia policy WP:COS though obviously I should have been - my only aim here was to clarify and correct the previously written entry.But what to do now? I am sure there would be a case for removing all my edits although in my opinion they have improved the entry. If that were to be done, I could, I suppose, get another editor who is not related to me to put the changes back again. I'd be interested to hear any suggestions. Work on 'The Millionairess' Play[edit]

I have an annecdotal source which says that the young George Devine directed the first production of GBS's play 'The Millionairess' with Edith Evans. This would have been in the 1930s - late 1930s. Can this be confirmed at all? ixo (talk) 18:59, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Michel Saint-Denis[edit]

I've added a citation to Wardle's biography of Devine to the end of para 1 of "Pre-War Years", but it doesn't quite bear out what's currently said in the article: Wardle says Devine was a great Francophile, welcomed Saint-Denis coming over to England, and that this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but gives the impression that this happened because of Marius Goring and not Devine himself. Just been looking at Jane Baldwin's Michel Saint-Denis and the Shaping of the Modern Actor (2003): [2]. Baldwin doesn't say anything about Gielgud's invitation being at Devine's suggestion (p. 61), though otherwise it's a very similar story to Wardle. I think the article should be revised slightly.
