Fair use rationale for Image:GFLlogo.png

Image:GFLlogo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

GFL Map

Alright, the map to the right is meant to display the geographic distribution of upper Bundesliga GFL teams and divisions (NOT including teams from the GFL2 league). American Nomenclature

All Amricans are from the US"? Have you ever heared of the continents of South- and North America? Obviously not! They are Americans too and not necessarily US citizens! Calistemon (talk) 07:46, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Sure I have. But, in both the context of American Football and in general, the noun "American", as per the Oxford English Dictionary is defined as "a native or citizen of the United States." when not used with an adjective such as "North" or "South". The term is assumed to be referring to US nationals unless such a modifying In the common vernacular, the term is used nearly exclusively to refer to United States citizens. I recognize that this point is, regardless, probably one of contention. So, I'm going to copy this discussion to the talk page of the article to get some other opinions and come back to it in a couple of days. Thanks for the commentary. I agree, that in most cases, American is meant to say US American. But I have been told off by Canadians in real life before who, quite rightfully, told me they are (North-)Americans, too, just not US-Americans. For the sake of disambiguation, the two letters US are a small effort to make to keep the meaning of a term clear. Thanks for pointing out the American page. If you'd take a look there, Twin Bird's comments of 12 April very much reflect my views. However, a larger discussion has taken place on Talk:People_of_the_United_States. It has led me to WP:COMMONNAME, which explicitly states: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it instead uses the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." If you can show me more English-language reliable sources that refer to people of the United States as US Americans than Americans, I'd gladly concede the point. But the fact is, the term US Americans is not the preeminent term, and, because of this, should not be used. Tutleman (talk) 06:56, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Your points are all very valid except that US American redirects to Names for United States citizens while American does not. Its a disambiguation page which suggests to me that enough Wikipedians voted for the term being ambiguous to require disambiguation. If it was a clear-cut case shurly American would redirect to Names for United States citizens, too. Calistemon (talk) 21:20, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

With all due respect, I believe that American redirects to a disambiguation page because there are other entities that go by the title of "American" (e.g. American Airlines, U.S.S. American...). I believe I have compelling evidence that "American" is correct. In the article Americas, citation 4 reads "Marjorie Fee and Janice MacAlpine, Oxford Guide to Canadian English Usage (2008) page 36 says "In Canada, American is used almost exclusively in reference to the United States and its citizens." Likewise, The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary, The Canadian Oxford Dictionary, The Australian Oxford Dictionary and The Concise Oxford English Dictionary all specify the USA in their definition of "America"." Furthermore, citation 5 reads ""America." The Oxford Companion to the English Language ... Since the 16c, a name of the western hemisphere, often in the plural Americas and more or less synonymous with the New World. Since the 18c, a name of the United States of America. The second sense is now primary in English". I believe that's rather conclusive. I think WP:COMMONNAME is a good point to bear in mind here. I accept the viewpoint that technically speaking there are very many people from/in "America" who are not citizens of the USA, but in everyday English usage the meaning of "American" in this context is fairly clear (especially clear if used alongside other nationalities). Alas, wikipedia is not here to right great linguistic wrongs. Discussing whether or not certain content should be on this page

A certain user has repeatedly reverted additions to this article. I much doubt the user in question has much knowledge of or interest in American football in Germany. I think we should both step away from this fight (even if the user in question probably feels like "winning" right now, what with the threats they keep posting on my talk page) and let the community of those interested in the content of this page decide what to include and what not to.
