From school I remember that ackusative and dative is bound to certain prepositions. Like hinter (behind), unter (under), nach (to, in some cases), zu (to, in other cases), bei (at), aus (from) etc. I do not remember them all, and it would be helpful to mention which prepostitions that gives ackusative and which that gives dative.
