Self-promotion[edit]

Surely that's not right? It reads like a C.V. rather than a wikipedia article. CrickedBack (talk) 11:17, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm inclined to agree. I'll see if I can find an appropriate template. Adpete (talk) 11:26, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Adpete: @CrickedBack: I also agree that this article, and articles related to this individual, read like self-promotion. Sunjaifriþas (talk) 19:05, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am noting the following instances of inflationary language in this article which I believe justify serious edits to reduce its promotional tone:
  1. Overview section describes the subject as a "consultant for the Oxford English Dictionary"; there are hundreds of people who have been consulted on certain entries[1] and this is not notable information.
  2. He is described as an "expert witness in (corpus) lexicography, (forensic) linguistics and trademarks (intellectual property)"; the citation points to a case judgement from the Federal Court of Australia [2]; where the subject was consulted once. Being consulted once on a case does not constitute notable information.
  3. Three "books" mentioned in the article are in fact short PDF booklets (around 40-pages): "Engaging" (2015), "Barngarlidhi Manoo" (2019), "Mangiri Yarda" (2021). These are co-authored with members of the Barngala language community who are not properly credited in the article. The original booklets also seem to attribute most credit to GZ. Additionally, "Dictionary of the Barngarla Aboriginal Language" is not a book and instead points to a seemingly defunct web dictionary [3].
  4. A number of institutions are listed on his page but he seems to have a present affiliation only with the University of Adelaide.
  5. A number of details are mentioned in a seemingly gratuitous fashion, e.g. quotes from Reuters article in 2006, the fact that he is the founder of the Adelaide Language Festival, etc. In general much of this irrelevant, inflationary promotional material has been taken from one of his multiple, lengthy webpage bios [4][5][6]. Take, for example, the statistic that "his" MOOC has "attracted 20,000 learners from 190 countries". This statistic is listed in various places (e.g. [7]) but there is no way of verifying this claim. The actual EdX page[8] shows "13,512" learners enrolled at this writing and, further, shows that the course is actually co-instructed by Rob Amery.
  6. In general the notability of the subject's contributions to linguistics are over-inflated because. Again, the sources backing up these claims are mostly the subject's own webpages or sources listed on the subject's own webpages. For instance, the subject's major contribution is ostensibly that he "proposes a controversial hybrid theory of the emergence of Israeli Hebrew"; while he was certainly adept at marketing and repackaging this idea, the hybrid origins of Modern Hebrew have been discussed in prior literature (e.g. [1]). Likewise, the contribution of "revivalistics" is very overinflated and only the subject's personal webpages or own publications are cited in support of its significance. Searching Google Scholar[9] shows that almost all references to the term "revivalistics" are in the subject's own publications, co-authored publications, or reviews of the subject's book of the same title.
More could be added. I await further discussion. Thank you, Sunjaifriþas (talk) 22:20, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Name in Chinese[edit]

Why do we need his name written in Chinese script? Even if he can read Chinese, his name isn't of any Chinese origin, which makes the Chinese script transcription totally irrelevant. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 05:07, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree - the Chinese trascription is so out-of-place, that I immediately set out to see if he has any Chinese ancestry, or lives in China - or anything - but he doesn't. So this transcription needs to go. Also, additionally, the article says he is Israeli-Italian-British-Australian what does this mean??? Israeli I can understand - he was born and raised there. Australian I can understand - he lives there now. But why is he "Italian" or "British"? Even if he lived in these places so small parts of his life, does he actually have citizenship of these countries? Would he consider himself to be "Italian" or "British" in any sense? It does help to have his Chinese name if one is looking for his Chinese publications. 121.214.207.199 (talk) 21:21, 31 May 2014 (UTC)AJ[reply]

change article name[edit]

how's Ghil'ad's name differs from Gilad Shalit? it's the same name! Hummingbird (talk) 01:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Name Pronunciation IPA[edit]

The IPA in the pronunciation of his first name contains an apostrophe. I double-checked, it is not a stress marker, it is an apostrophe. I have never seen an apostrophe used in IPA. I'm not sure, but I think it is a typo. Can an expert check that out and make changes if necessary? Thanks! --User.name.here (talk) 01:52, 24 May 2019 (UTC)user.name.here[reply]

I changed to ʔ, which has IPA Number 113 and is unicode code point U+0294. Jan Arvid Götesson (talk) 02:22, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
