Name[edit]

ok this article name can't be the permanent name. tortfeasor & i can't really think of a better name right now. the name translates to Bronze Seated Maitreya Statue, & in korean is usually specified by the treasure no. 78.

for now, i'm going to at least space out the words to make it more readable, but we need a better english name, please! Appleby 00:23, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Bangasayusang is also a geundong mireuk bosal bangasang. The Geumdong Mireuk Bosal Bangasang is also a bangasayusang. Both terms (not names, terms) could refer to either statue, so I think both articles need to be renamed. 05:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Um, cha.go.kr mentions samsan bangasayusang (Hangul: 삼산반가사유상, Hanja: 三山半跏思惟像) as an alternative name for no. 83. Maybe we could use this instead? --KJ 09:15, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the crown is called a samsan-gwan. cha.go.kr mentions that it's because the crown is shaped like a mountain with three rounded sides. The site doesn't mention any other names for no. 78, though.

Bangasang means half-sitting statue, and bangasayusang means half-sitting contemplative statue. All the half-sitting statues I know are also contemplative. I guess they both refer to the same thing, most of the time. --KJ 04:35, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Gilt-bronze Maitreya in Meditation is a gilt-bronze statue of Maitreya seated in meditation. It measures 83.2 centimetres (32.8 in) in height and probably dates to the middle or late 6th century. One of the best known and regarded Korean Buddhist sculptures, it was designated as the 78th national treasure of Korea in 1962.Photograph: National Museum of Korea

Notability[edit]

Hi Farang! I'm a bit suprised by your notability tag in the Gilt-bronze Maitreya in Meditation (National Treasure No. 78) article. To be fair I'm not exactly sure what the standards for notability of an artwork in particular are exactly, but a quick look at, for example, [[Category:Renaissance paintings |Renaissance paintings]] with hundreds of articles for individual paintings gives me an approximate idea.

The sculpture in question is clearly a major work of korean art, referenced alredy as highlights in two major museums in two different continents, and a third party cultural organization.

My main concern is not about this article, where it is easy to find several other sources for notability, but about other articles I've worked or plan to work with, where information is more scarce.

Myshkin, the article's subject should be notable enough per WP:N, that's all. I doubt whether the suspect has received enough coverage to merit its own article.
