Feminism[edit]

How is it feminist? It seems the opposite to me, portraying girls as frivolous Nik42 04:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This song was inducted into some sort of National Archives-type collection of historically relevant recordings with tracks like "Respect!" by Aretha Franklin, etc. Ugh. Can't quite track it down. The list is somewhere here on wikipedia, though. Help??

The song is femenist and I think the article you are looking for is Songs of the Century. :)Wannabe Wiki (talk) 06:52, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the lyrics: "Some boys, take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest of the world - I wanna be the one to walk in the sun. Oh girls, they wanna have fun." Rebellion against Patriarchy in society? Women’s suffrage? Feminism seeks to sure that men and women are treated as equals rather than property or less. Just like men, women want to "have fun" and enjoy their lives without worrying about being oppressed by sexism. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 09:23, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, though the word "just" wanna have fun makes it sound like girls don't actually want to do anything more serious, which I think is why people get a different impression from the song. I came to the page to see why it was a feminist song, and so far I still don't know. Ninahexan (talk) 04:59, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's possible to recognise the shortfalls of the song whilst recognising the ways in which it does challenge patriarchal attitudes. From what I understand, Cyndi Lauper did not write the song and felt the original lyrics to be somewhat misogynistic, which she didn't want to be associated with. She tried to change the lyrics to be more 'liberating'. Whether or not it succeeded or not probably depends on what we are comparing it too (I'd say it does better than a lot of other pseudo-feminist songs). Does something stop being feminist if it fails to question -all- patriarchal assumptions? Wight1984 (talk) 21:24, 09 October 2009 (GMT)

Similarities to an Earlier Song?[edit]

From the first time I heard it, I thought "Girls just Wanna Have Fun" sounded like a 1962 song by Claudine Clark called "Party Lights." It even has the same theme: a young woman trying to get her apparently-overbearing father to let her go and have some fun. --NameThatWorks (talk) 22:03, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about a mention of the fact that the song played a featured role in the movie The Goonies? Llamabr 01:33, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Cheetah Girls version[edit]

Was it supposed to be of the original song or "Hey Now"? --zenohockey 04:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Hey Now.jpg[edit]

Image:Hey Now.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Brazilian Chart Positions[edit]

I don't understand what this is doing here. The article is about the single. Removed once again. Aleichem (talk) 14:37, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Australian ARIA chart[edit]

At the time of this single's release, the Australian singles charts were not named the ARIA charts - from mid-1983, the Australian Recording Industry Association had licensed the 'Kent Music Report'. ARIA commenced compiling its own charts in-house from the week ending 26 June 1988. (Pwhytcross (talk) 11:34, 17 June 2008 (UTC))[reply]

3" CD?[edit]

The article mentioned a 3" CD re-release but I've never heard of a "3-inch CD". Can anyone comfirm if it's 3" or 8cm? If it's 8cm please change it to so because unlike vinyl, CDs are usually measured in centimetres not inches. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.183.73.143 (talk) 06:47, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In 1989 the Epic Records released the 3" cd single Girls Just Want To Have Fun in US and Europe. http://www.cd3music.com/cd-singles-02/232_0_2_0_C http://www.cd3music.com/cd-singles-02/278_0_2_0_C — Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.2.227.252 (talk) 22:35, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

first-time-ever computer generated images?[edit]

I don't think this is right: "[...] with which she and her producer created several first-time-ever computer generated images of Lauper dancing with her buttoned-up lawyer[...]" Shouldn't this read something like: "first-time-ever computer aided editing" or something similar? As it is now, it seems like we are talking about a CGI Cyndi or something like that. (69.165.160.163 (talk) 20:22, 2 April 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Cover versions section[edit]

After the "Cover versions" section was entirely verified with citations in accordance with Wikipedia policy, non-notable songs have been added to the section and unverified content now exists. Further work is required and I will try to revisit the section shortly, but please read the relevant policy section on cover versions and multiple renditions. The following directly cited quote lacks a signal phrase indicating who the quote is attributed to or why their opinion is relevant to the article. This is poor attribution and should be corrected by the article's editor/moderator: "The year 1983 makes a watershed in the history of female-address video. It is the year that certain issues and representations began to gain saliency and the textual strategies of female address began to coalesce."

Additionally, there is absolutely no evidence that 1983 was a watershed year in "female-address videos," a vague term that doesn't appear to be used outside that quote. The entire quote should be deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:E48B:B600:158A:69A8:453B:FEB1 (talk) 12:30, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Grouch Girls Don't Wanna Have Fun"[edit]

Why do my edits about the parody song "Grouch Girls Don't Wanna Have Fun" get undone every time? I provided more than enough evidence to back it up. -- 68.163.108.150 (talk) 20:54, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You've provided evidence it exists, but no reliable sources talking about it to show it is notable. Doctorhawkes (talk) 23:20, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Grammy-winning music video?[edit]
