Untitled[edit]

This article over-plays the role of Ca2+. It should be revised in the light of C. Agulhon, T. A. Fiacco, K. D. McCarthy, Hippocampal Short- and Long-Term Plasticity Are Not Modulated by Astrocyte Ca2+ Signaling, Science, 327, 1250 (2010). From the abstract: 'Neither increasing nor obliterating astrocytic Ca2+ fluxes affects spontaneous and evoked synaptic transmission or synaptic plasticity. ... at least in the hippocampus, the mechanisms of gliotransmission need to be reconsidered.'
