Significant Page Revision[edit]

I've just copied over a significant revision to this page from my sandbox User:Kattusite/Goemai. The primary additions include a discussion of the phonology, morphology and syntax of Goemai.

This includes a discussion of Goemai's sound system (vowels, consonants, tone, and syllable structure), along with a discussion of word formation strategies used in Goemai (including affixation, clitics, reduplication, etc.), and finally a discussion of the syntax of the language. The syntax section is currently the most brief, mostly limited to a discussion of basic word order.

I have tried to cite facts and examples whenever possible. My revisions rely heavily on Hellwig's 2011 grammar of the language. Ideally, additional sources would be introduced in the future to corroborate (or dispute) Hellwig's analyses.

Finally, I have tried to leave the original lede of the page mostly intact, but with additional information corresponding to the newly added sections. There are a few claims that seemed to be disputed among different sources, which I've tried to point out. A non-exhaustive list: the number of native speakers (some seem to imply all 200,000 ethnic Goemai are native speakers); the genetic classification of Goemai (several authors have used different terminology for very specific sub-classifications, which I've addressed in the lede); the sound system is presented exactly as Hellwig 2011 describes, and Hellwig expresses some uncertainty about certain phonemes and tones (which I've tried to draw attention to). All of these topics would benefit from a more detailed treatment drawing upon additional sources, but I hope that this will serve as a good starting point.
