someone needs to say that Google Video doesn't use VLC anymore. It uses Flash.

Google Video Down

Was Google Video down for a while after Google acquired Youtube I remember a period when google video was not available, but it turns out it is available again. Geographical filtering

"Regardless of general availability, content providers are given the opportunity to limit access to video files to only users from certain countries of residence. However, methods of circumventing geographical filtering exist." Anyone have information about how to avoid this geographical filter? I can´t find in google a useful solution, even when at least, for Google Video is no longer restricted but it is for MySpace and TV on demand--ometzit<col> 15:00, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Google Video deletes broadcast content?

Has Google deleted their broadcast content? I tried to search for "Sesame Street yip yips" (aliens on the show), and nothing came up. PBS had opted in to the thing, so I read. It worked fine a few months ago. -- user:zanimum

New file format?

I just downloaded a file and it's *.gvp instead of *.gvi. I haven't been able to convert it to any other format using the methods listed on this page.

- Ok, I just did some Googling and found out what you have to do. Save the GVP file by following the prompts on the screen(http://xs65.xs.to/pics/06043/googlevid.jpg). Then open the GVP file with a web browser or a text viewer(notepad/wordpad/Word). There's a URL, just copy that loooooooooooong thing. Paste it in your address bar and VOILA! you are asked if you want to download the AVI file. Now for someone to format my crap and make it look pretty.

no ipod

I advise everyone not to download videos to your ipod via google video. I did, and everything on my ipod was erased and i have to get it fixed now because i cant download anything else to it now. BackInBlack 17:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

iPod and PSP

Both are MPEG-4 media files containing an H264 video-stream (part 10) and an AAC audio-stream (part 3). The files differ in other parts of MPEG-4. You could simplify by saying both are basically the same video with different headers. (Wi(c)ki 00:17, 2 May 2006 (UTC)):

Error on page

I don't know what happened, but now, whenever I click a video from google, it loads a blank screen and at the bottom left corner (in status bar), it shows a yellow caution triangle and the text "error on page". After looking around for a bit, I don't seem to be the only one with this problem, and no one knows how to fix it.

Note: When cookies are cleared, Google Video will work once, then it goes back to the error on page thing on the second video I click. - June 22, 06 111

Player version

Selling videos?

The article claims

[...]make their own media available free of charge or through Google Video Store for a cost that they can set.

It's true that the ability to sell one's own video was widely announced, but I don't think it is in place. Does anyone know how a private person can offer a personal video for sale on Google Video Store? If not, then this statement should be corrected. AxelBoldt 18:53, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Converting GVI without third-party software

The section on "how to download and convert Google video without program" was deleted [1], with the valid justification that wikipedia is not an internet guide. However, as we are mentioning commercial conversion software, I think it should be noted that

a)it is really easy to do and no third-party program are needed

b)one can convert .gvi files into .avi ... simply by renaming them. I read that on a forum (can't find a serious source for it and it worked on the few occasions I tried it, but I can't guarantee all GVI files are encoded in AVI.

Maybe we can just rephrase the whole thing in a more "encyclopedic" style (no use of second-person)?

I think it is a valuable information that has its place in wikipedia. What do you think?

====Very simple conversion with no program====

1. It is simple to convert a GVI or GVP file. First, download file. Then open file with a text editor such as notepad. There will be a URL address. Copy the URL into your browser. You will then get a download window from a Google server for the file's real format; AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc. Also, the URL will turn blue.

2. An alternative way is to add the following text into your favourites/bookmarks:

youtube problems

i used to download vids of google for my ipod, or just to watch on my computer. now that they include youtube videos it is impossible to find these, does anyone know a way or have this problem? should this be included in controversies?Daniel625 00:48, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

There is an advanced search function which enables you to either include or exclude youtube content. Because youtube is owned by google, I think google is reluctant to demonstrate this as a permanent feature. hykos 22:04, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion, split this article be split into two

I think there should be one article about google video, the website/web application, and one article about the google video player, the Windows/Mac program that plays saved videos from the website, even though you could just get the .MP4 format that will play using many other less proprietary video player applications (Media Player Classic, VLC, etc). Windows location of the cache

The article says : "n Windows o/s variants this cache is typically located at "C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files".", which is totaly unuseful since no one uses win 95/98 anymore. Could someone correct it to reflect the location on XP and with browsers other than IE (firefox) if it is browser-specific ? No mention of the shutdown?

I spent close to $200 buying videos from these people, and in August 2007 they closed the servers. Now I can't watch the various movies I purchased.

And wikipedia acts as if the event never happened?!?!? Apparently this article was "cleansed" by the google police to erase that negative publicity. Relax, and notice that the article does say "As of August 2007, the DTO/DTR (download-to-own/rent) program ended. Users who previously purchased a video from Google Video were no longer able to view them. Paid amounts were reimbursed as values for Google Checkout and were valid for 60 days." Notice, too, that you can click the "edit this page" button at the top of the screen allows you to insert supporting information. No more uploads in Google Videos

I added citations to their blog post on this topic. They ended video uploads but existing videos will continue to be updated. However the only discussion I could find was when they announced that they were planning to do this (in January) -- I couldn't find the actual date they turned these off. Porn

AVI and MP4 Playback

Correct me if I'm wrong about this but in the AVI and MP4 section of this article it says Windows Media player cannot play the special AVI's then it says Media Player classic can play them but only with ffdshow. Blogger video hosting

Videos (posted) on Blogger are hosted on Google Video by default. The assumption that Google migrates all videos to YouTube is not entirely accurate.

However, one cannot re-claim videos from Google Video-hosted servers.

Still up!

I am curious as to why the article says Google Videos has been discontinued. While the video upload and hosting features have been dropped, Google Videos still provides video search and the URL still links to the video search page. Article split redux

I'd never heard of the "Google Videos" search tool, and how it relates to Google Video(s), I have no idea other than that they both involve video. This is disambiguation page stuff.
