Governor-General[edit]

What's this stuff about the Irish Governor-General having the same role as the Canadian Governor-General? Under the Free State constitution the Governor-General was bound to act in accordance with the "law, practice and constitutional usage" relevant to the Governor-General of Canada. Where did that come from?

And do we have a source for this statement: It was hoped that, if he was given the same title as that used in other dominions, then, if the British government attempted to violate convention by using the office of Governor-General to interfere in the Free State's affairs, these other nations would see their own autonomy threatened and might object. Constitution of the Irish Free State (Article 51):

"The Executive Authority of the Irish Free State (Saorstát Eireann) is hereby declared to be vested in the King, and shall be exercisable, in accordance with the law, practice and constitutional usage governing the exercise of the Executive Authority in the case of the Dominion of Canada, by the Representative of the Crown. There shall be a Council to aid and advise in the government of the Irish Free State (Saorstát Eireann) to be styled the Executive Council. The Executive Council shall be responsible to Dáil Eireann, and shall consist of not more than seven nor less than five Ministers appointed by the Representative of the Crown on the nomination of the President of the Executive Council."

Thanks. Extraordinary, but then again, the whole process of Irish constitutional development seems to have been quite unusual in comparison to other Dominions. What about that "It was hoped..." business above? Surely that's not fair dinkum! Pete 09:10, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

An interesting approach[edit]

Sorry to be the curios person here, but I would like to know the whole project of how a person or individual becomes a state governor. I've become quite interested in it for some reason and wish to know everything about how a person is granted the office.--Zhang Liao 04:15, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

The article implies that the title "His Excellency" is associated with membership of the Privy Council. That title of Privy Councillors is of course Rt Hon.119.224.91.84 (talk) 09:09, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
