Championship Game[edit]

While Tiffin and St. Joe's did play each other, and the winner was going to be the conference champs, it wasn't a conference championship game. It was simply a regular season match-up. --Colslax 01:21, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, perhaps the heading should be "Conference championships" instead? That seems to be how it's referred to on the GLFC website.

St. Joseph's upsets Dragons in GLFC Championship 24-23 St. Joseph's (8-3) beat the 12th-ranked Tiffin University Dragons (10-1) with a classic fourth-quarter comeback to win the first GLFC Championship 24-23 in a thrilling football game. Tiffin, which finishes with a school record 10 victories and only one defeat, led 23-10 in the third quarter and stopped three second half Pumas drives with interceptions before the Pumas finally took the lead on a touchdown pass by Anthony Lindsey followed by the extra point with 1:20 left in the game. Tiffin followed with a late drive of their own, getting down to the Pumas 25 yard line before Deqwan Young made his second interception of the day, giving the Pumas the victory. Tiffin led 20-10 at the half, with Tom Fritsch and Dyshaun Edwards hauling in touchdown passes from Matt Root, while Troy Brookins also had a 90 yard kickoff return for another touchdown. The Pumas' Dan Paulsen, however, stole the show with 237 yards receiving on 14 receptions (both school records), with 10 of his catches leading to first downs. While Tiffin shut down the Pumas rushing game (-7 yards), St. Joseph's got the job done through the air (376 yards on 35 of 64 passing). St. Joseph's defense also stepped up, allowing only three points to Tiffin after halftime. St. Joseph's 8 victories is a new school record.

I think that is more a case of poor PR work, or good scheduling. That was a regularly scheduled game, which would be difficult to consider a conference championship. In that same token, the Big Ten has had a conference title on and off for years involving OSU-Michigan. -Colslax 03:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the list to just be "conference champions" without making it appear there is a championship game. This year S&T took the championship in what was obviously not a championship game... the press release from last year isn't clear as to whether or not the champ happened to be playing #2 at the end of the season ENDelt260 (talk) 02:31, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dragons win 2007 GLFC Championship with 62-26 win at Central State
Tiffin University (9-2) claimed the Great Lakes Football Conference Championship with a big 62-26 victory at Central State. The Dragons got off to a strong start early with 28 first quarter points, including 21 points in the first 8 minutes. Pierece Wade scored the first of 4 touchdowns on a 3-yard run at the 10:37 mark. The Dragons then blocked the first of 3 punts on the day, with Jon Hemmelgarn recovering the block and returning it 6 yards for another touchdown after Central State's first possession of the day. After recovering the ensuing onside kick, TU's Wade then scored on an 8 yard run to make it 21-0 at the 6:52 mark of the 1st quarter.
Matt Root then connected on the first of 3 touchdowns, hitting Dyshaun Edwards on a 12 yard pass with 21 seconds left in the first quarter for another score. Wade scored again at the 10:50 mark of the 2nd quarter, and Root finished TU's scoring in the first half with a 4 yard pass to Alvin McKnight. TU led at halftime 42-14.
Root opened the scoring in the second half with a 12 yard pass to Tom Fritsch, Donnie Johnson scored on a 17 yard run after another punt block, and Wade capped off TU's day with a 73 yard touchdown run at 5:31 of the 4th quarter. Wade led the Dragons with 155 yards, as TU totaled 279 rushing yards in the game. Root connected on a blistering 18 of 21 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Central State's Derrick Moss was held to just 38 yards on the ground by a tough Dragons defense.

Missouri S&T wins 2008 GLFC Championship with 63-23 win over Southwest Baptist; Marauders fall to St. Joseph's Missouri S&T' won their first football championship since 1983 as the Miners beat Southwest Baptist 63-23 and Central State fell at St. Joseph's 30-7. The Marauders had entered the game with no losses in the GLFC and needed to win to claim the title, but a 30-7 loss to the Pumas opened the door for the Miners. The Miners put together the second-higest offensive total in school history in the win, as quarterback Brad Guidry threw for 437 yards and a school record 7 touchdowns in the win.
