why, why, why?[edit]

Why do pages like this exist? Who ever looks at them? If I need to know the Greek name for Paris, I won't look for Greek exonyms, I'll go to Paris and click on the interwiki column.

That each language has names for foreign places, adapted to their own phonology, is obvious. So what is interesting about such a list? What can we learn from it? If it were restricted to Greek names that are not clearly related to the local or English names, or have been affected by false etymology, or shed light on the origins of non-Greek-speaking place-names – that could be interesting; but as it stands it's nothing but a dictionary.

Why do we need this article more than, say, List of Greek words for automobile engine parts? —Tamfang (talk) 19:30, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
