Notability[edit]

The VfD was a while ago now, but I wanted to bring up before this goes down the FAC track that I don't see independent notability for this topic. The Reception covers a bunch of appearances of the level and that opening sentence is probably its best bet for notability, but it doesn't appear to be the subject of independent pieces (at least as added), such as an in-depth analysis of the level, an evaluation of the level in comparison to other levels, or an explanation of how the level introduces the Sonic mechanics or why it is popular or notable. Anyway, wanted to add that before it's too late. For now, many of the current quotes in Reception could use grounding in whatever game or situation they describe (e.g., it wasn't called "nostalgic" apropos of nothing). czar  05:09, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, I appreciate you saying this now. Regardless, it is the—or at least a—subject of a few articles: current sources 2, 17, 19, and 20. Tezero (talk) 05:33, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's mentioned in the title, but the level isn't actually discussed as more than a passing mention. I did some searches of the main academic databases and the WP:VG/RS search to see what I could find, but nothing more than passing mentions showed up. There might be a GDC postmortem or something like that to fill in those extra details, but I wasn't able to find it. Also if this article stays, it could use treatment of the Zone's theme music, which is part of the level. (Some of the passing mentions noted specific reactions to the music.) To my original point, I'm not sure this level is more notable than "Level 1-1" in the context of an encyclopedia. Not sure it's worth the extra time. I'd be curious what others would have to say czar  05:46, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Of those four, it's only a passing mention in 19. Tezero (talk) 06:05, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This should be redirected to Sonic the Hedgehog (1991 video game) or Sonic the Hedgehog (series).--Vaypertrail (talk) 08:40, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've given this more thought and I agree that it should be merged to either, preferably the series article since it's a recurring element. It doesn't need much more than a few sentences either. The papercraft and desk prank stuff, while nice perhaps, is overkill for an encyclopedia entry (and likewise for the gameplay unless an analysis of the level itself is added) czar  03:20, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. While most video game levels wouldn't be notable enough for their own articles, this is an exception. Multiple sources give more than just passing mentions too. Kokoro20 (talk) 07:36, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've opened a merge discussion at Talk:Sonic the Hedgehog (series)#Green Hill Zone merge proposal czar  01:06, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image choice[edit]

Wouldn't an image depicting the level's original form be more appropriate as the article's sole image? The article is largely about that, not the later 3D remake of it (or any other iteration). Sergecross73 msg me 20:57, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That could work. I picked the current one because it shows more of the topography and styles native to the location, I didn't want the reader to have to look at the same unseemly image of Sonic in Green Hill in yet another article, and personally I think this one's prettier, but perhaps proper representation of the prose's contents (which are largely centered on Sonic 1) outweighs those. Tezero (talk) 03:03, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sergecross73 and Tezero: Completely agree that a screenshot of the original level (File:SonicTheHedgehog1.png probably) should be used instead. The 1991 version of Green Hill Zone has had a far greater and more iconic impact on the gaming world than its 2011 remake, and is also the primary focus of the article. No objections thus image replaced. Satellizer el Bridget (Talk) 12:05, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
