Constraint payments[edit]

Constraint payments are made to other electricity suppliers as well as wind. In 2011/2012 they totaled £324 million of which £31 million went to wind. In 2012/2013 thanks to improved transmission capability payments were £130 million of which only £7 million were for wind. VRE Sources[edit]

The task of balancing the grid indeed got harder with proliferation variable renewable energy sources, but the current text is very dated. I have added some implication for very quick response, but the following topics need to be covered:

fast ramp-up is required to compensate for an unpredicted rapid drop of wind power (rare, but very real event);
modern wind and even PV sources can participate in balancing;
the low marginal cost of VRE tends to cause closing of the baseload power plants with their rotating machinery.
