Order of Votes on Arena[edit]

The City Council vote to proceed with the arena project took place on December 8, 2003. The vote was 5-4, with Mayor Markowitz breaking the tie (verified by the Bloomington City Clerk, cityclerk@cityblm.org). The advisory vote on whether to use public funds to build an arena was conducted on March 16, 2004, and failed, 3513 to 6796 (verfied by Bloomington Board of Election Commissioners, becvote@becvote.org). Some residents of the City were angered, not because the City Council disregarded the referendum, but because it did not wait for the referendum. User:Tgreenbu 14:39, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tgreenbu 19:02, 5 April 2006 (UTC) How do we get this continuing slander removed from Wikipedia? The City Council had entered into binding contracts to build the arena on March 8, 2004 (The Pantagraph, Bloomington, IL March 9, 2004), which once again was prior to the referendum. These were not split votes; Markowitz didn't even vote on the building contract because a majority of the City Council appoved them. Markowitz would have been violating her fiduciary duty to the City if she had recommended breaching contracts without legal justification. As far as I'm concerned, the entire last paragraph could be removed.[reply]

You can call it bellyaching if you want, but it's a moot point, since the unwanted building is now built. The main point is, Markowitz forced this on the community so she would have kind of a monument to herself. Wahkeenah 22:56, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since this part of the article is obviously slanted and contested, I believe it would be wise to leave it off entirely. The Coliseum has generated an operating profit, and the losses are only from bonds issued from the city, which is common in major civic improvements such as this.
