Merger[edit]

Does this article warrant independence from the Guatemalan Americans article? I suggest migrating this info to the former, unless there's reason enough for a separate article on solely immigration (which there is not for any other ethnic groups in the US except pan-nationalities, like Arab, African, and Caribbean immigration) Cristiano Tomás (talk) 08:25, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that having nation-specific immigration articles are very important and present an important gap that needs filling on Wikipedia. First of all, country, rather than region-specific immigration is important as there are particular push and pull factors that change one country to the next (ie. civil wars, asylum claims accepted in the US from Nicaragua but not Guatemala or El Salvador based on US anti-communism politics, etc.). Based on US different policies with different countries, the means of entry and ebbs and flows of entry are also different. This is already partly recognized on Wikipedia by the presence of nation-to-nation specific migration articles, such as Irish Migration to Puerto Ricohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_immigration_to_Puerto_Rico and Irish migration to GB: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_migration_to_Great_Britain.

Furthermore, Wikipedia needs an article on migration flows that is separate from that on Guatemalan Americans, as the latter includes those who are third and fourth generation American and likely did not have experiences with temporary work programs or issues of civil war in Guatemala. The experiences and dynamics of migrants can be differentiated based on their legal status.

Thus, it seems pertinent, to include a separate article on Guatemalan migration to the US. Izullmann (talk) 16:52, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
