I am confused[edit]

Can someone please confirm this for me....

The ship, built in Scotland, Linked to a City in wales - yet has a motto "We yield but to St George" - the patron saint of England. - I think HMS dragons a little confused about her nationality! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.68.51.2 (talk) 19:28, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"HMS Dragon slipped into the water from BVT's shipyard at Govan, Glasgow, with an 18m Welsh Dragon on its bow."[1], that's a quote from a BBC News article which partially confirms your statement. I'm not quite sure where the confusion lies regarding HMS Dragon's national affiliations; she seems to be quintessentially, and purposefully, a symbol of British unity.

The motto goes (I think) with the ship name, like the ship's badge - there have been several previous Dragon's which have served with the Royal Navy. So the motto relates to the story of George and the Dragon, but given the decommissioning and scrapping of HMS Cardiff it was obviously decided that the name was also sufficiently Welsh for this particular HMS Dragon to be asscoiated with Cardiff. 12:51, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok - We were given the impression here that there was going to be another 'Welsh Warship', (AKA HMS cardiff) - Shame that the closest thing we'll get is a ship who tells us to Yeald to St. George. Battle honours[edit]

I removed these from the article infobox, another editor has restored them. I may have been wrong in removing them, so have asked for clarification at WT:SHIP. Mjroots (talk) 05:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It like some of the other stuff talked about jsut above, badge, motto and battlehonours all go with the name, not the individual ship. David Underdown (talk) 14:54, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For British ships it's more practical to have all the ship name's battle honours on the ship name's disambig page (i.e. HMS Dragon), whilst repeating just the battle honours that that particular ship has earned on just the article page. This is because it may confuse readers who are not familiar with the commonwealth system, or may in fact not be all that familiar with ships at all, that is the point of an encyclopaedia after all. The confusion is that they have to work it out, and the original reason why this was brought up is evidence of this. If people have to stop and ask why, and then wait for a commonwealth editor to inform them, then it's obvious that that particular system isn't working. Dragon mural on bow[edit]

I think the dragon mural on the bow of the ship should be mentioned in the article as it's unusual for a modern-day RN ship to have and is a notable characteristic of HMS Dragon. It was added whilst under construction and many thought it would go once in active service, but they've maintained it. Argovian (talk) 21:49, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
