Pages for the people[edit]

i think that someone needs to make individual pages for the characters. i would do this myself, but i don't know how.AnimorphGracie (talk) 21:16, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't see the need right now. Perhaps if and when a sequel is released my opinion will change.Doniago (talk) 18:02, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i just think that they deserve pages (especially CORNY!!!!!)AnimorphGracie (talk) 01:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We'll have to wait until they're notable enough. The characters have only appeared in 3 movies, which are all just different versions of each other. The least we'll be able to do is create a "List of Hairspray series characters". I'll probably try this right now, but if it gets deleted/nominated, I'll just accept it and wait for the sequel to do this. Leo-Roy!review/gb 16:12, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

why is everyone always against me?!?!AnimorphGracie (talk) 21:12, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make the pages, knock yourself out. Frankly this kind of emotionally-charged statement doesn't support your argument but makes me _less_ inclined to agree with and/or support you, but again, nobody's stopping you from charging ahead with it.Doniago (talk) 03:49, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i can't i don't know how, & why r u people so mean?AnimorphGracie (talk) 22:13, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We're not being mean. At least, I'm not. Doniago, in my opinion, went too far. To create a page, just type the desired article title in the search bar. If it brings you to search results, then the desired title is free for taking. Just click the red link saying "Create (title name)". It'll bring you to an edit box. Once there, just type what you want the page to say.

plot[edit]

strictly opinion: I think the hairstylist needs her own section, given the title of the movie. Furthermore, parallels need to be drawn between black people, white people, fat people, skinny people regarding interpersonal communications and other various interactions within modern culture and society. In addition, the director is a homosexual, so comparisons and contrasts may also need to be made between gay and straight individuals. 71.238.71.180 17:35, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

history of setting[edit]

The article mentions the setting in the plot briefy and i beleive it also has some external links to such words like "integration" and "segergation". I feel that there should be a more in deph summary of the historical setting of the 60's. Chelseacarr04 (talk) 15:53, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess it could go in. I know I'm kind of shifting my opinion from earlier in the conversation below, but I'm going to go ahead and create it. Although I'm not a 100% expert on Wikipedia (I have been reverted in my early edits), but I'm not sure, so I'll go ahead. Don't be mad if it gets deleted though. StarfoxRoy|guestbook| 20:35, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant casting[edit]

The article mentions most of the cast in the opening sections, then there's a cast list, then there's a production and casting section that lists them all over again without giving much new information.VatoFirme 20:25, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Theme[edit]

What is a good film page without an explanation of the theme(s)? The themes are certaintly important because they reflect the dominant ideas of the film. Chelseacarr04 (talk) 22:26, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possible "wink" to The Sound of Music[edit]

The "Shankman's inspirations" section of the article says that he included "a lot of winks" to films that influenced him, with The Sound of Music being one of the films listed. In the "You Can't Stop the Beat" scene, the dress Penny is wearing is supposed to have been made out of the drapes in her bedroom, which can be seen during "Without Love", which I think may have been another so-called "wink" to the part of The Sound of Music where Maria made play clothes for the children out of the old drapes. While I know including this in the article at the moment would probably fall under speculation or original research, I thought I would bring it up in case anyone had come across a source out there that made mention of this. If there is one and I'm not just reading too much into this, this could probably be included in the article as well. —Mears man 04:26, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, when I watched through the movie with commentary by Nikki Blonsky and Adam Shankman, Shankman did say that Penny's dress was meant to be a "wink" to The Sound of Music. Does anyone know how/if this could be cited and incorporated into the article? —Mears man (talk) 00:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done I figured out how to appropriately cite the commentary a while back, just thought I'd post here in case a helpful somebody decided to try and explain it to me somewhere down the road. —MearsMan talk 01:30, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question about song title[edit]

Currently, the article lists the second version of "The Nicest Kids in Town" as "The Nicest Kids in Town (Reprise)". Normally, I wouldn't even stop to think that there might be a problem with this, seeing as the song is a reprise of "The Nicest Kids in Town". While watching the DVD (2 disc edition), however, I noticed that, under the "Jump To A Song" feature, the song is named "The Nicest Kids In Town (With Tracy)". Seeing as the song wasn't on the soundtrack, this is the only place (that I can think of) where the song has been mentioned by name, which makes me wonder if "(With Tracy)" is the true name of the song instead of "(Reprise)". I personally don't have anything against "(Reprise)" (in fact I think I actually kind of like it better), but I believe that this article needs to be as accurate as possible, so I'm asking to see what others think. —Mears man 04:42, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought to watch the credits of the film to see how the song was listed there, and the credits list it as "The Nicest Kids In Town (Reprise)". Considering this, I'd say that this really is the true name of the song (it certainly sounds better than "With Tracy" to me), and I'd guess that somebody who was working with the DVD simply gave it the wrong name. Sorry for asking a question just to answer it myself, but I'm going to leave it as "(Reprise)" unless anyone has any thoughts or objections. —Mears man 04:50, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(10 years later, lol) I actually like that this is here. It shows one Wikipedia process – you ask a question, you find new info, you "correct" it yourself (which in this case involved doing nothing). It also shows that, considering the goal is to write an encyclopedia, the small details matter.

John Waters template[edit]

Is the John Waters template at the end of the article really appropriate for an article such as this? I mean, yes, he did write the original Hairspray, and he did make a cameo in this film, but besides that he didn't have much to do with what this article's about. To me it seems like it would make more sense that, if we're going to have a template there, to have a template of someone more directly associated with this film, like Adam Shankman for example. What does everyone else think? Should we leave the template, change it, or remove it entirely? —Mears man (talk) 14:14, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bye Bye Birdie[edit]

I came across this site, where Adam Shankman says "One of the really fun things is that Ricki Lake is cameo-ing into this as of one the William Morris agents. We did a little research and what we thought would be funny is if they were coming to cast “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” which was made the following year after HAIRSPRAY supposedly takes place, which is 1963. I think that’s right, anyway. But I thought it would be really funny if the William Morris agents were coming to scout for who would play “Kim.” I’m sure nobody on the planet will understand this, but it makes me laugh." I really thought this was interesting and would like to see it added to the article, but I'm not sure where it would be best to include it. Does anyone have any suggestions? —Mears man (talk) 14:42, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Awards[edit]

There's been some concern over the long list of awards present in this article, so I've removed the following awards from the article:

If you disagree, feel free to say why you feel it should stay in the article, or even put it back yourself. I'll be the first to admit I don't know too much about most awards, so something I find to be non-notable could in fact be quite important. If there's something that I left in the article that you feel should be taken out, please mention that as well. If you think what I've done is fine, I'd love to hear that too. It's nice to get some feedback every now and then. :-) —MearsMan talk 00:43, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Musical number organization[edit]

Sorry I messed it up, but I can't find a way to make it more clean. Please help me out! StarfoxRoy 00:51, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I feel like I've grown a bit too close to this article over the last year or so, so I've left a message over at the WikiProject Film's talk page asking for their thoughts on your additions. While I agree that the section does need a bit of clean-up now, I can see where your additions could potentially be beneficial to the article, so I thought I'd ask for a second opinion before doing anything. —MearsMan talk 01:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bloopers[edit]

I believe adding a bloopers section to the page will enhance the quality. Not many film pages have a bloopers sections and the section is very relevant. Im sure many people would be interested in the mistakes and goofs this film has. Chelseacarr04 (talk) 21:12, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really information though. It's the kind of thing that you would find on celebrity/media gossip sites, not general informational sites. If you do find something, you could probably include it in the context of the plot when/where it can be found. StarfoxRoy(guestbook) 21:54, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plot error[edit]

In the plot section, the black kids from Negro Day are named "Detention Kids". I don't see this anywhere in the movie, and more properly, they are the roles of the "Negro Day Council", considering their on the only part of the movie that shows the feature (New Girl in Town). They were also invited to Maybelle's platter party, and obviously she wouldn't have just invited the kids from detention (which is how that name refers them). It sounds much better and makes MUCH more sense to call them the 'Negro Day Council/Kids'. If anyone is against this, let me know. StarfoxRoy|guestbook| 20:03, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are listed as Detention Kids in the film credits. We have to go by the official references. 2001:569:7466:DA00:D177:631F:E416:E188 (talk) 09:07, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have read over this film page and it is a great page, but I also have a few suggestions to make some changes. The changes would possibly make the page a bit more informative if that is even possible: 1. I would like to add more about the controversy of Penny and Seaweeds relationship especially during that time period. 2. Also I would potentially like to give a little more background concerning the plot. Oil olive (talk) 15:45, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This film page is most certainly one of the better quality pages on wikipedia. I feel that it touches over all essential elements as well as other very nice touches. One change i would like to make about the page though, is possibly adding a "setting" section. In the plot the setting is briefly mentioned but I feel that setting is the major foundation of this film. The time period and place shapes the characters and events.Chelseacarr04 (talkcontribs) 00:30, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I kind of think that the setting was reflected in the older incarnations more thoroughly, but so many parts of the plot were snipped and gutted in the process of the 1988 film to Broadway, and from Broadway to the 2007 film. At it's current state, the only thing that bases itself entirely off of the setting is "Good Morning Baltimore". Also, most other film pages don't have broad mentioning of the setting either, mostly because movies are created (these days, at least) so that the movie could be slapped into any city they want. It's just more work on the set than needed. Not entirely the case here, but I just don't believe it to be necessary. Haha, that was a long rant I just made. My fingers hurt now. :P StarfoxRoy|guestbook| 20:10, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The "Negro Day" dancers should be referred to as the "Negro Day Council." I felt like the plot was too wordy, so I shortened many of the phrases. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Latashism (talkcontribs) 17:37, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Television Showings Table[edit]

I made a new table showing the networks Hairspray was debuted on including date of beginning, but it could use some fixing up. It's too small and must certainly be outdated. StarfoxRoy(guestbook) 20:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Corey Reynold's cameo[edit]

Why was this deleted? It was apparently deleted for his not being in the movie at all, but what the deleter didn't know was that 'Trouble on the Line' appeared during Tracy's introduction to Seaweed in detention. I specified that in the article so it didn't get deleted again. I don't mind if it gets reverted, so long as you say why. StarfoxRoy(guestbook) 00:19, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Split "Awards" to new article[edit]

I'm not really 100% at this point, but the awards Hairspray won is quite a long list. Some were deleted (see above message my MearsMan), and others have been awarded for sure. StarfoxRoy(guestbook) 00:22, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chester Gregory cameo[edit]

This was removed at some point. Possibly a while ago. I tried tracing the editor that deleted it via history. But why delete it? By looking at the collector's edition of the album, it clearly says "Chester Gregory", and the song sounds exactly like the song heard in the first detention scene, and I'm sure there's evidence somewhere on the net if it possibly needs reference. I have re-added it, until a reason to delete it should come up. Leo-Roy!review/gb 01:02, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion pertaining to non-free image(s) used in article[edit]

A cleanup page has been created for WP:FILMS' spotlight articles. One element that is being checked in ensuring the quality of the articles is the non-free images. Currently, one or more non-free images being used in this article are under discussion to determine if they should be removed from the article for not complying with non-free and fair use requirements. Please comment at the corresponding section within the image cleanup listing. Before contributing the discussion, please first read WP:FILMNFI concerning non-free images. Ideally the discussions pertaining to the spotlight articles will be concluded by the end of June, so please comment soon to ensure there is clear consensus. --Happy editing! Protagonist - antagonist[edit]

Whoever wrote this page labours under the misunderstanding that protagonist=good guy and antagonist=bad guy.

It is not so; see the wiki page on classic greek drama for the correct meaning of protagonist.88.110.127.251 (talk) 14:14, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done I've removed those labels; they're generally not needed in any case. Doniago (talk) 14:54, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Last movie to be released on VHS[edit]

According to the internet, that movie is A History of Violence and not Hairspray. Whoever keeps adding this, please stop. Hearfourmewesique (talk) 14:03, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

White & Black[edit]

The text "White" & "Black" in this article should be capitalized, as such words refer to the racial groups.

AppGoo0011 (talk) 14:41, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The very first sentence of that link says: "Ethno-racial "color labels" may be given capitalized (Black and White) or lower-case (black and white)." It should definitely be consistent throughout the article, but what's your argument that they should specifically be capitalized? DonIago (talk) 21:05, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It can be confusing. Someone could be white but not White. (e.g. white clothes; white skin, but not White ethnicity) AppGoo0011 (talk) 22:17, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
...are you suggesting that this article could be confusing to a reader because they might think that the uses of 'white' and 'black' and referring to the clothing worn by the characters? DonIago (talk) 03:11, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically in this article, no. Just in general. AppGoo0011 (talk) 22:27, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
