"the three books edited by Reuben Shapcott" -

I am not an authority, but I have just read the Autobiography of Mark Rutherford, and it appears that the "editing" by "Reuben Shapcott" is Hale White's literary device, consistent with the presentation of the book as an "autobiography" of the semi-fictional Rutherford.

I would especially direct you to the "preface" to that book, supposedly written by "Shapcott"; it clearly seems to be written in White's ironic style, as a piece of unreliable narration.

This Hale White Wikipedia entry seems to imply that "Shapcott" is a real person, even supplying a dead link for a future Wikipedia entry for "Shapcott."

(Or is the joke on me? :) )
