How do you pronounce Halfords?

is it hal-ford or half-ord?

The original Halford shop was named after the street in Leicester where it was founded in 1902. This street is called Halford Street, and is (or was) pronounced 'half-ord' by Leicester people. That is the original pronunciation. (a) if you have 299 stores, I think you count as a chain already. i suspect this is mangled and meant to mean something else. but what?

Leicester

(b) i have a book here 'Leicester, Past and Present, Vol Two: The Modern City', which claims that Halfords started (not unreasonably) in Halford Street, Leicester. Morwen - Talk 21:10, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Removal of street racing reference

Any reference to street racing will be removed, surely a company with shares in the stock market do not want to be associated with illegal activities. WilliRennen 18.20 2 March 2006 (utc)

Holland/Belgium

It now mentions in the article that these stores are run by a separate company, and have only historical links to our Halfords stores. Thanks Editor5807^speak 18:45, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

This part was removed in 2011. The other, simultaneous changes were okay, but I think it is an error that a company with historical ties and the same name is nowhere mentioned, so I reinstated it, in a slightly different wording. Bever (talk) 20:59, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Pronunciation

Professor John Wells discusses the pronunciation of Halfords in a blog post (Friday 2 November 2007, about two-thirds of the way down the page):

"He raises a different but similar point, namely the identity of the vowel in Halfords (a well-known chain of cycle shops). Mark says

I still don’t know whether it is hɒlfədz or hælfədz.

Personally I say neither of the above, but hɔːlfədz. I think this is one of a number of words spelt with <alC> in which spelling pronunciation is leading to the replacement of historical /ɔː/ succesively by /ɔːl/ or /ɒl/ and then ultimately by /æl/. A good example is falcon, which used to be /ˈfɔːkən/ but is now increasingly /ˈfælkən/."

The person at the top of this talk page seems to have yet another variant: /hɑːfədz/. It's /hælfədz/ for me, as someone a few decades younger than Wells, but does anyone know how the people who run the company pronounce it? This apparent vowel shift also has relevance for other articles with <alC>, like Malvern. Old Man of Storr (talk) 18:28, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Halfords Autocentre

I see no reason to have this as a separate article from the main Halfords article. I know it started as a separate company but it isn't any more. Biker Biker (talk) 13:25, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Halfords Autocentres are a seperate company to Halfords retail but owned by the same parent company. They operate as two seperate non compeating business, with a completely different operating structure. The only common ground they share is the Halfords brand name and a (small) section within the Halfords head office in Redditch 85.158.139.101 (talk) 13:44, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Support merger - they may be slightly separated in the family tree, but the two are not independently notable of each other. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 07:58, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Remark: In the Annual Reports and on the company's web site they are described as two 'segments' of the same company, sharing the same three 'strategic pillars'. This article is both about the retail division (the original Halfords) and the encompassing Halfords Group. Bever (talk) 21:04, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
