Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 15, 2008.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ...that the largest private home in the U.S. in 1790, Hampton Mansion (pictured), was occupied by the same family until 1948 and is the first national historic site selected by the U.S. National Park Service for architectural significance?
Current status: Good article

New picture[edit]

It looks like a picture that had been here has been deleted from Wikipedia due to lack of source. I went ahead and uploaded a public domain NPS image. — Eoghanacht talk 14:32, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Closure[edit]

Future editors: if you happen to check the NPS website link, and notice that the mansion has been reopened, please delete my notice in the article. Thanks. — Eoghanacht talk 14:32, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"provide a comprehensive insight into late 18th century and early 19th century life"[edit]

I'm not sure this is a fair statement. Certainly it gives us a very deep insight, but into a very narrow segment of the population. Perhaps a comprehensive insight into the life of a family wealthy enough to afford the largest house in the country, but certainly not representative of the 'everyman'... Point well taken; maybe "comprehensive insight" isn't the right choice of words. What is meant is the Hampton NHS exemplifies the social stratification of the time, i.e., an aristocratic family enjoying fine art, sumptuous dinners in a grand mansion, and elegantly terraced gardens, supported by a retinue of indentured servants and slaves living in crude dwellings performing all the chores of farming, milking, cooking, gardening, etc. That seems to be the theme the National Park Service has picked up on in the last couple of years, with increased attention to exhibits at the slave quarters. Perhaps better wording is in order, so I've qualified the sentence by adding, "...of the landowning aristocracy". JGHowes talk - 04:29, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
