age of building[edit]

Hey, there is a discrepancy between two sources as to the age of this house. It is correct to show that there is a discrepancy. It is not correct to smooth over the difference, imputing that there was one date known at one time and that the current website has superior information. From my prior experience with National Register application documents, I believe it is the one to believe a bit more, in fact, as it is written by historians. The website could simply have a typo.

The current sentence in the article states: "The original date of erection had been placed at 1680 when the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 [1], subsequently the date of erection has been changed to 1724 [2]." I will revise that to restate the discrepancy.

This can be resolved by obtaining the NRHP application document (free by request to the National Register, and/or by finding a source which specifically discusses the NRHP application document or the 1680 date and specifically discredits it in favor of a revised date. doncram (talk) 23:46, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is also possible that the National Register's date of 1680 might apply to the barn or another structure on the property. Again this could be resolved by getting a free copy of the NRHP application. doncram (talk) 23:52, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The history of this property is explicitly described in the nomination form for the Canoe Brook Historic District, which explains that the present house was built in 1724, and that an older house (the Swain House, no longer extant) stood on the property this one was subdivided from.
