Deserted?! Why?[edit]

One imagines that the most intriguing part of MacNeal's story would be his 1906 desertion, but the sources (in a cursory inspection) show no reason. Today's Marines are trained (or selected) not to give up until dead. Was it the same in 1906? Here is a fertile field for historical research. Any USMC historians out there with a bit of time to spare? Snezzy (talk) 05:28, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is the second example I've come across of a Medal of Honor recipient, also a Marine, who deserted. According to the same source I found for MacNeal's desertion, Corp. Charles Brown, who received the MOH earlier during the Korean Expedition in 1871, "deserted before medal was approved."
