University of Pittsburgh[edit]

The University of Pittsburgh template is here, but there is no mention of it in the article. More information needed, especially if an inline citation is available. --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:44, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template...[edit]

Magio, as per WP:BRD, can you explain why you wish to apply the template to the external links? As per WP:External, such templates are strictly optional, and seem to be adding no value here. I'd be grateful if you sought consensus first, rather than continuing to edit-war. Hchc2009 (talk) 12:27, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Per {{official website}} this is preferred. It is in the documentation Please undo your edit. Thanks Magioladitis (talk) 16:22, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The use of the template helps cpmpare data with wikidata. Undoing the edit adds no value and instead makes data comparison more difficult. Magioladitis (talk) 16:25, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I believe we should use the template in order to have same data in other wikipedi projects and wikidata. Still i am also ok if we use the template only for comparison. What are your arguments for opposing the change? Magioladitis (talk) 16:31, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see that "preference" in the documentation you've linked to Magio; rather, WP:External says clearly that the "use of the template {{official website}} is optional." Hchc2009 (talk) 07:02, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hchc2009 Per documentation "Prefer using this template instead of adding direct urls in the External links section." Apart from that since we have two ways to do the same thig and the one has some advantages and is "optional" and not "deprecated" so I see no reason not to do it. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:43, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Still not seeing it on the link you've given ({{official website}})... Hchc2009 (talk) 08:46, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hchc2009 Here: Template:Official_website/doc. It refers to th External links section only. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:48, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Found it. Adding it to an obscure documentation page with no wider discussion, in contradiction to the main guideline page, clearly doesn't work as a way of generating cross-wiki consensus. If you want to do mass changes on this basis, my strong advice is to start a conversation at the village pump, and then once you've achieved consensus there, alter WP:External. Hchc2009 (talk) 08:50, 28 August 2017 (UTC) Hchc2009 Changing the text of documentation while in conflict is not nice you know. I reverted you. The discussion was mainly on the standardisation. The wikidata part is optional. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:51, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
