Negative Bias

After briefly reviewing this article, it seems to have an obvious anti-China bias. At one point it says "a great many of its people live at socioeconomic levels far below the national average." Obviously - 50% of any population falls below average, but this and other non-statements give a bias. Does this bias exist? If so, is it okay having this bias? Should it be removed? Plan to revise article

The existing article is currently rated as High Importance on the project's important scale but is only rated a Start Class article. The article has several large flaws that currently prevent it from being more comprehensive - insufficient in-line citations, lack of strong references, poor representation of all areas relating to the topic, and poor organization. Intheend9 pointed out a need for additional sections about health insurance law and the Healthy China 2020 project. I agree that these two sections are excellent additions that are extremely important in China right now, and there are several subsections that could be included concerning primary care reform, private sector reform, and policy implications that the article briefly addresses throughout various points in the article, but does not explicitly group into a section or subsection. The history of China's healthcare reform is described in much detail, but there is a lack of proper in-line citations and references, and does not offer insight into the healthcare reform today. Intheend9 mentioned that there is a biased anti-China tone in the article; I think much of this stems from the lack of sufficient references to back up the facts stated. I would like to work on providing a more comprehensive introduction, editing existing sections to add sources and additional detail, and adding more sections about health insurance law, Healthy China 2020, and the Chinese public's opinion on healthcare reform. I plan to revise this article using scholarly sources, such as Health Policy, Feminist Economics, New England Journal of Medicine, and Social Science and Medicine. This contribution is a part of a class assignment for a Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities course at Rice University, so I would appreciate any advice, constructive criticism, and tips as I work on this article! Overall, the article is highly readable, supported by ample scholarly sources, and the neutrality issues brought up by other Wikipedians seem to have been corrected effectively.

One possible area of improvement could be in the addition of new content, particularly in the addition of discussion regarding certain changes to Chinese healthcare over the past thirty years or so, such as those posted by another Wikipedian on your user page. Some of these go beyond the scope of the edits we are expected to make in this course, but I would especially recommend including more information regarding SARS and infectious disease such as HIV/AIDs, gender inequality issues, and coverage of migrants. Some information about migrant healthcare may be found at Migration in China. (Although I may be a bit biased since that is my article...)

This is a really well done article! The only substantive suggestion I have is to elaborate on the NRCMCS and Healthy China 2020 (what exactly do they do, how have they been accepted, what have major challenges and/or successes been) and adding some health statistics for China. Beyond that, just look over your sources, as a few of them seem to have extra information added (7 and 11, for example) and try to find/ create a couple more images or graphics to add to the understanding of the article.

Hi Denise! Thanks for your edits to the article and Wikipedia. I'm quite interested in global health and it's nice to have a fellow Wikipedia similarly enthusiastic. Speaking of GAs, I might just schill a little for them, as heaven knows we need some more reviewers! A list of all articles that are waiting for a review is here Wikipedia:Good_article_nominations. Despite what other Wikipedians tell you about reviewers, they're a fairly random lot (me included!) If you're interested, I'd encourage you after one or two weeks to have a look and even try reviewing an article or two yourself... probably a small article at the start (it can get quite addictive!) It's a truly fascinating way to get a glimpse into a wide-variety of generally well-edited quite interesting topics, and there will always be a few that interest you.

In terms of the review, there are some things that will, more-or-less, definitely stop you from passing. That's not having statements that are sourced. Make sure it has a thorough copyedit beforehand for any grammatical problems, that will almost definitely get picked up. Then it is quite dependant on the reviewer. With any luck you'll get someone who knows a fair bit about the healthcare system in China and can contribute something relevant to the discussion.

I quite like your article. There are some significant events that you may want to mention (or not! it is up to you) that I feel might expand this article and are relevant to Healthcare Reform in China. These include:

• Complete eradication of schistosomiasis during the 1960-1980s (don't quote me on the dates here!)
• Development of the parallel military health / public health / TCM systems
• Implementation of the new mental health laws in 2011-12
• Changes to the organ donation system starting next year (moving away from forced donation)
• Reforms made to the blood transfusion system in the early 1990s following HIV/AIDs transfusion outbreak
• Reforms made to public reporting of infectious disease following the SARS outbreak in 2010.
• Reforms made regarding the 'one child policy', population aging, and the abortion epidemic at the moment (and loosening of the one child rules recently)
• Attempted reforms made regarding the water supply in major cities, and also the air quality, both of which have attracted a lot of attention this year!
• May want to mention a little bit about Violence against doctors in China (ok, a little bit biased here, I did write that article!), particularly the issues of a very demoralised workforce in a profession that is not popular with wages that are quite low, and any efforts to tackle that.
• Any problems affecting the large undocumented workforce in the major cities

I hope this helps. China is a huge country and this article will probably need to be suitably broad! I'm sure you know that this year both the Lancet and the BMJ have been running series' on Healthcare reforms in China. Review articles there would be a good place to start. Review & Revision plans

Thanks to previous editors, this article is already relatively complete and organized, with a number of scholar citations. I've carefully read the article and below are my plans to make it more comprehensive, detailed and reliable.

(1) Large up-to-date edits. The last major edit was made in 2013, and the past 5 years has witnessed new policies in Chinese healthcare system. Most data, like infant mortality, percentage of rural residents with medical insurance etc, are far out of date. Besides, most sources cited were published before 2010. Consequently most sections should be updated, adding recent progress. An example of my edition would be rewrite Healthy China 2020 into Healthy China 2030.

(2) Contents regarding urban healthcare. This article focuses on rural China, detailing RCMS and NRCMS, while urban healthcare system and its reform is paid little attention to. I'm considering adding comprehensive urban hospital reforms started in 2010 and 2015.

(3) Cleaning. Data about life expectancy and infant mortality unnecessarily appeared twice in 2 consecutive paragraphs. Some refrences like the 9th are not functional. I'm going through the article in datail in order to make it error-free.

(4) Adding sources to facts and adding more refrences. In "New Rural Co-operative Medical Care System" Section, the article cited "Preliminary studies" without refering what these studies actually are. Similar problem appeared several times in "1940s-1980s" section as well. Apart from this, this article overly relies on several scholastic articles, citing them too many times, while the total number of refrences are not enough. My plan is to adding most recent refrences to the facts and data. Thanks Deniselee26 for providing list of related scholarly journals.

(5) Reorganization. The 4th section "health insurance laws" should not stand as an independent section, for changes in health insurance laws are part of previous and current reforms. Contents before 2010 should be put into "History" section, and more contents on recent changes will be added to "recent changes". Another plan is to set every major reform as a section and place them in time order. Besides, healthcare conditions before 1949 should be added to show status quo before early reforms.

(6) Change or removal of irrelavent contents. The World Bank Health VIII project should not be considered part of Chinese healthcare reforms, as it was a regional project providing funding and facilities, and had little influence on healthcare systems, unlike other nationwide reforms in article. The "policy implcation" section seemed irrelavent to healthcare reform itself, and opinions from Institute of Development Studies should be put into "Public opinion" section.

(7) Balance between perspectives. Currently this article emphasizes too much on the inequality created by healthcare reforms, overstating it multiple times in different sections. On the other hand, the benefitial effects is merely supported by several out-of-date statistics, without going in detail. My plan is to describe the influences and public opinions thoroughly and objectively using scholarly articles, official statements and independent institute's views altogether.

Major Edit Summary

Hello fellow Wikipedians. I made an major edit to this article Nov.29, 2017. As I forget to summarize it when finishing, I will put my summary here.

1. Created sectors: 2 healthcare insurance systems in urban areas, changes in public hospitals and other providers, and China's essential drugs system.

2. Reorganization: Paragraphs are now organized regarding to what they are reforming: insurance, providers and drugs.

3. Edited sectors: Updates are made to RCMS sectors to show recent ideas; fully expanded and updated NRCMS sector to show recent changes and to give a more comprehensive description.

In this edition, I mainly used academic journals(Chinese and English) official document from China government. Some sources are reports from independent research institutes and news from reliable media.

Suggestions for Future editions: 1. Changes in drug supply systems for public health facilities. 2. Private healthcare sectors, how they are different and what their functions are. 3.
