This article only covers WW2[edit]

As currently written, this article only covers use by the Luftwaffe in WW2 - it contains nothing about prewar use by the Luftwaffe, nothing about use in the Spanish civil war, or by the Nationalist Chinese, nothing about use in WW2 by operators other than the Luftwaffe, nothing about civil use etc. At least some discussion should be made of non Luftwaffe WW2 use, either here or in the main article.Nigel Ish (talk) 17:53, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bergström 2007[edit]

There are three references by Bergström dated 2007:-

Transport Role for the He 111?[edit]

I started over on the main Heinkel He 111 page, then linked over to this page, to find out what the He 111 was used to transport later in the war?

I was curious, since the airplane is fast for a transport, and can carry a decent load, but has relatively limited internal volume. However, the production numbers of the He 111 means that there were lots of air frames around.

I also wonder if any modifications were made; e.g. were MG's removed, was a bigger door put into the side, or the bomb bay widened so that large cargo could be hoisted up into the former bomb bay?

If you look at the original He 111 page linked above, there is a sub-section near the bottom titled "Operational History", with a direct link to this page. The first sentence of that sub-section says:

The Heinkel He 111 served the Luftwaffe across the European theater as a medium bomber until 1943, when a loss of air superiority resulted in it being relegated to a transport role.

In fairness, there are a couple of sentences buried in the text concerning the Demyansk Pocket, 1941, or the battle of Stalingrad, 1942, and one sentence about transport duties in the midst of the three paragraphs about "Late War Use", but this information is tiny compared to the rest of the article, and scattered about.

So if the above is a true statement concerning transport use in the last two years of the war, and the reader is directed here to this page, then I suggest that some information on transport use during the last two years of the war be discussed and added. Perhaps a sub-section to mention the key points other than the ad hoc uses. Otherwise the original statement on the main He 111 page should be changed -- IF such use did NOT occur except occasionally.
