Hendrik de Roy ( Henricus Regius) was descended from a distinguished family, and born the son of Justus de Roy and Tilia Wilkersloot. He was educated by his uncle the lawyer Hadrianus de Roy. R. Enrolled in Law at Franeker, but soon went to Groningen, where he matriculated in Medicine on 22 October 1617. However, he did not remain at Groningen either, but was inscribed at Leiden on 24 September 1618 at the age of 20. He studied there under Heurnius and Bontius. After some years R. Undertook a long journey to Italy; robbed of his money he was forced to join the French Military service, but continued his journey afterwards and graduated MD at Padua on 29 March 1623... After his return he settled in practice somewhere in East-Friesland. In 1625 he was unsalaried town physician at Utrecht, and in 1630 practising physician and rector of the grammar school at Naarden... In 1634 R. returned to Utrecht, where he married Maia de Swart on 21 January 1634....Under the influence of his neighbour in the ' Munster schans' street, the professor of philosophy H. Reneri, R. Became acquainted with the new anti- Aristotelian views of Descartes; soon he was an enthusiastic admirer and follower of the French philosopher. On 10 July 1638 R.was appointed professor extraordinary of medicine at the Utrecht University founded two years earlier. In the next year, R. became full professor. R. taught theoretical medicine and botany. In his lectures R. did not conceal his Cartesian views, on the contrary. . Rgeius's anti-Aristotelian philosophy caused much concern and unrest in the univeristiy. The professor of theology, G. Voetius, became his opponent. Finally it was resolved that only the philosphia pernnius was to be taught at the Unveirsity. Gradually Regius became more and more independent of Decartes. The

estrangement which arose became complete after the publication of his Fundamenta Physices in Amsterdam in 1646."
