Comment and two questions[edit]

Johnsemlak, Nice start on the article about Bowen!

I just have a couple of questions. In the lead, it says that he was a philanthropist, but I don't see anything about that in the body of the article. Do you have a source for that, per WP:CITELEAD, or content that could be added to the article?

Also, is there more information to prove notability - perhaps the role/importance of The Independent, his role as an abolitionist and/or philanthropist, etc. In other words, what makes him particularly notable?–CaroleHenson (talk) 17:18, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article with a min-bio of Bowen that does describe him as a 'philanthropist.' I'll add it as a source, though I agree it would be better to have examples of his philanthrophy in the article. I'll look for more info on his notability in areas you suggested--i think there's plenty of material. Though I hope we've already met GNGs by now. Thanks for your feedback and edits. Also, I am wondering if this article can be a candidate for DYK nomination.--Johnsemlak (talk) 17:57, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great! IMO, the article doesn't meet WP:GNG yet. One of the key issues is whether he's made a significant contribution to society in some way.
Absolutely. I would be happy to nominate it for a DYK if you like - perhaps something like "Did you know... that Henry Chandler Bowen founded the newspaper The Independent in 1848?" Feel free to nominate it yourself, if you'd like. Perhaps after a bit more content is added to establish notability.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:07, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly I plan to add more. That said I think founding the newspaper teh Independent, being a founding member of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, and building Roseland Cottage (a official National Historic Landmark) are lasting contributions to society do meet GNG IMO. Some fo this can be more thoroughly documented in the article. --Johnsemlak (talk) 18:21, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:39, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Johnsemlak, Here are some sources that speak to his notabiliy and philanthropy, such as the Historical/Biographical Note and Description section, interactions with other presidents, etc., how he figured in the aftermath of Beecher's sex scandal, his role as a philanthropist, furthering Congregationalism, role of The Independent, and Worldcat. I think that the information here helps to establish notability and I think that with this, he meets WP:GNG and WP:Notability (people). One of the sources is the New York Social Diary, I am not sure how reliable the source is, but the info found there could be used to search for better sources.
It might be good to mention, too, that his first wife died before he married the second - to close that loop (i.e., vs. divorce, other). If you need or want help expanding the article, etc., please let me know.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:13, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it is a great article topic to develop, and I commend Johnsemlak for starting it. One of the sources i added covers a lot about philanthropy, in that he organized/co-founded/was a substantial player in an organization which in turn started lots of churches. --doncram 22:55, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
