Was May's military career unusual?[edit]

I am intrigued that (at least according to the BBC) May served for 13 years, including about a year in wartime, without rising above the rank of private, but then, after his original engagement was completed, he rejoined the army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant within about one further year. It seems odd to me that his potential was not noticed during the first 13 years, where in spite of extreme bravery and, perhaps, some skill in addition to luck, he failed even to become a corporal; and yet when he rejoined, he was quickly made an officer. I know very little about the British army during WW1. I vaguely remember being told that the difference between officers and enlisted men was largely a matter of class, but that is clearly not the whole story, for during his first engagement he did not even rise through the non-commissioned ranks, and also, when he rejoined, he did become an officer. Were such stories exceptional? Enginear (talk) 17:21, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
