Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1[edit]

Did Wood really conduct the world premiere of this work? Does anyone know the date, soloist, and other details? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 08:05, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The programmes for this evening's Proms (Henry Wood Day) say it was the UK premiere, in 1900. JRawle (Talk) 00:49, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, gentlemen. I've amended the article to show it under his UK premieres. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 08:48, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move per request as the common name with the perk that it avoids the need for any disambiguator--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Joseph WoodHenry Wood (conductor) Henry J. Wood — The English conductor, Sir Henry Wood, is not commonly known by his middle name. Please see the external links and references of this article, and also the fact that The Proms were for a time known as the "Henry Wood Promenade Concerts" after his death. City of Destruction 17:16, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support. Sir Henry Wood would be an alternative, but it is ambiguous with the general. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:11, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Henry J. Wood would be even better, as (a) that precise formulation was what he was best known as, and (b) it obviates the need for a disambiguatory descriptor. But this move is at least an improvement. We don't put Sir/Dame etc in the title of our articles, Septentrionalis. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 21:42, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • If he was widely known as "Henry J. Wood" (I'm not aware of that, but then I'm not that familiar with him), then I would equally support a move to that. City of Destruction 22:02, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for pointing that out. Modyfying my move request to "Henry J. Wood" per your suggestion. City of Destruction 19:30, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sea Songs[edit]

"His famous medley Fantasia on British Sea Songs, prepared for the 1905 centenary celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar, is now an indispensable item at the Last Night of the Proms."

This is no longer true. Sadly they now appear to be an optional extra at the last night. Not being played in 2010, for example. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.102.39.201 (talk) 08:17, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well this year it's because they were included in the original full Wood arrangement in a recreation of the 1910 Last Night alst Sunday afternoon. In fact the original Wood version has barely been used since the late 40s, I'll reword slightly though. David Underdown (talk) 08:39, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article title[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved Kotniski (talk) 12:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Though I note the above discussion and agreement to move the (then) "Henry Joseph Wood" to "Henry J. Wood" (which is certainly an improvement) I must report that at the recent FAC considerations there was a clear view that the title would be better still as "Henry Wood (conductor)". It is true that Wood himself always used the "J", but people don't use it now, and it would be more helpful to our users to drop it. See discussion here, about half way down, kicked off by GuillaumeTell. Thoughts, please. Tim riley (talk) 18:47, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • ... people don't use [the "J"] now ... - well, this people always uses it, and I suspect others of my generation would too. But, at the end of the day, it's about making the article as available as possible to as many readers as possible, so I won't object to Henry Wood (conductor). -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 19:27, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's sort of ironic that the article has been through several titles, and yet the only person on the Henry Wood dab page who is actually generally known as Henry Wood (pace JackofOz) is this one. The cricketer was Harry Wood and the army officer is currently Evelyn Wood (British Army officer). Henry Wise Wood seems to have been known as such. And, for heaven's sake, Ellen Wood (author) turns out to be "better known as Mrs Henry Wood" (so why isn't her article entitled Mrs Henry Wood?). As a result, I've now started to wonder whether this Henry Wood, without the (conductor), ought to be the title of the Henry Wood page, with an otheruses link to a dab page that's better than the current one. Time to consult my friendly neighbourhood dab advisor... --GuillaumeTell 22:09, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Joining the discussion as requested! As a reminder, there are two separate issues: (a) what should the article be titled, and (b) is this man the "primary usage" of the name "Henry Wood". Without having the expertise to comment on (a), I'm inclined to believe that the answer to (b) is "Yes". So we could move the disambiguation page to Henry Wood (disambiguation), and either make Henry Wood a redirect to Henry J. Wood or move this article to Henry Wood. There is ample precedent for a redirect as a primary usage - see HP as an example ("HP" is not the name of the article, which is "Hewlett-Packard", but that article is the primary usage of "HP" so the redirect goes there). PamD (talk) 09:01, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Gosh! Things move apace. Thank you, PamD, for getting them moving. Tim riley (talk) 18:05, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can we move this to Henry Wood, then, once the dab page is moved to Henry Wood (disambiguation)? I take it from the above that there is no objection?--Kotniski (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think there was a consensus at the FAC discussion and subsequently that moving the article to Henry Wood would be the best thing to do. As far as I can see, nobody has disagreed with this. Tim riley (talk) 19:44, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've just looked at all of Special:WhatLinksHere/Henry_Wood (it should have been appearing on some list of "Disambiguation pages with incoming links") and sorted out a couple which were clearly not intended for HJW - dabbed the architect of parts of Ashton Court and unlinked the founder of King Arthur Flour (who was only linked in infobox, not in article text). All the rest, which previously led to the dab page, now lead via the redirect to this page. Also added the "redirect" hatnote to this page, to direct people to the dab page if they aren't looking for HJW. PamD (talk) 22:24, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All right, so I've requested that the "Henry Wood" redirect be deleted; when that happens, this page can be moved to that title.--Kotniski (talk) 08:22, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have updated the dab page so it won't need further change after that page move. PamD (talk) 09:10, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grateful thanks to the experts, above, for moving the article and dealing with the associated moves and adjustments. Tim riley (talk) 18:26, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've just tried to move this page to Talk:Henry Wood but (unsurprisingly) it didn't work (sigh!) --GuillaumeTell 19:06, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've put a db-move on the target talk page, so hopefully that will be corrected soon.--Kotniski (talk) 09:35, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All done.--Kotniski (talk) 12:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Writings/Bibliography section[edit]

Hi all, I've created a small writings/bibliography section that I would suggest be included in this article, if others concur. Grove lists a few "introductions" Wood wrote to various books, but my initial instinct is that they would be out of place in such a section. Aza24 (talk) 20:43, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, given no objects I've inserted the writings section as (I believe) it's uncontroversial. Happy to discuss further. Aza24 (talk) 07:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
