Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1[edit]

Henry Joseph Wood → ~~Henry Wood (conductor)~~ Henry J. Wood — The English conductor, Sir Henry Wood, is not commonly known by his middle name. Please see the external links and references of this article, and also the fact that The Proms were for a time known as the "Henry Wood Promenade Concerts" after his death. Support. Henry J. Wood would be even better, as (a) that precise formulation was what he was best known as, and (b) it obviates the need for a disambiguatory descriptor. Sea Songs[edit]

"His famous medley Fantasia on British Sea Songs, prepared for the 1905 centenary celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar, is now an indispensable item at the Last Night of the Proms."

Well this year it's because they were included in the original full Wood arrangement in a recreation of the 1910 Last Night alst Sunday afternoon. Though I note the above discussion and agreement to move the (then) "Henry Joseph Wood" to "Henry J. Wood" (which is certainly an improvement) I must report that at the recent FAC considerations there was a clear view that the title would be better still as "Henry Wood (conductor)". It is true that Wood himself always used the "J", but people don't use it now, and it would be more helpful to our users to drop it. ... people don't use [the "J"] now ... - well, this people always uses it, and I suspect others of my generation would too. It's sort of ironic that the article has been through several titles, and yet the only person on the Henry Wood dab page who is actually generally known as Henry Wood (pace JackofOz) is this one. The cricketer was Harry Wood and the army officer is currently Evelyn Wood (British Army officer). Henry Wise Wood seems to have been known as such. And, for heaven's sake, Ellen Wood (author) turns out to be "better known as Mrs Henry Wood" (so why isn't her article entitled Mrs Henry Wood?). As a result, I've now started to wonder whether this Henry Wood, without the (conductor), ought to be the title of the Henry Wood page, with an otheruses link to a dab page that's better than the current one. Joining the discussion as requested! As a reminder, there are two separate issues: (a) what should the article be titled, and (b) is this man the "primary usage" of the name "Henry Wood". Without having the expertise to comment on (a), I'm inclined to believe that the answer to (b) is "Yes". So we could move the disambiguation page to Henry Wood (disambiguation), and either make Henry Wood a redirect to Henry J. Wood or move this article to Henry Wood. There is ample precedent for a redirect as a primary usage - see HP as an example ("HP" is not the name of the article, which is "Hewlett-Packard", but that article is the primary usage of "HP" so the redirect goes there). I think there was a consensus at the FAC discussion and subsequently that moving the article to Henry Wood would be the best thing to do. As far as I can see, nobody has disagreed with this. Tim riley (talk) 19:44, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've just looked at all of Special:WhatLinksHere/Henry_Wood (it should have been appearing on some list of "Disambiguation pages with incoming links") and sorted out a couple which were clearly not intended for HJW - dabbed the architect of parts of Ashton Court and unlinked the founder of King Arthur Flour (who was only linked in infobox, not in article text). All the rest, which previously led to the dab page, now lead via the redirect to this page. Also added the "redirect" hatnote to this page, to direct people to the dab page if they aren't looking for HJW. PamD (talk) 22:24, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Writings/Bibliography section[edit]

Hi all, I've created a small writings/bibliography section that I would suggest be included in this article, if others concur.
