Beware popular folklore[edit]

This entire article is problematic. Most historians recognize the Herb House as entirely 19th century. The fact that bricks were used in its construction would alone preclude 1730s as to date. Having spent more than a decade researching and writing a 476-page book on Savannah's history of the 1730s I never once encountered this property. The Mary Morrison Historic Buildings Survey suggests 1853 as construction date, which is the same year it first appears on maps. Beyond marketing--and there certainly are a few Savannah institutions that deliberately market "their own brand of history"--there is no documentary/archaeological evidence for this dating to the 1730s; there is much evidence (bricks/brickwork pattern/first appearance on maps) suggesting it to be mid-19th century. Fair points. I’ll do some digging and amend what isn’t supported by more than one source. Seasider53 (talk) 15:05, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JeffersonLH: I've amended it now. Not sure the bit about the gardener living there still applies, but I've left it in for now. Seasider53 (talk) 17:01, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well done! That's a bit of bad tour-guide lore I've been fighting for years. I was downtown taking pictures today and grabbed one of the Herb House (File:Herb House.jpg). I already uploaded the thumb to the Buildings_in_Savannah_Historic_District page, so feel free to use it here. JeffersonLH (talk) 23:05, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
