Cleanup needed; conflict of interest[edit]

recent deletions[edit]

Herb Wesson's family information was recently deleted.

Per Wikipeida: When information is unsourced, and it is doubtful any sources are available for the information, it can be removed. If a source can be found, but you do not wish to supply one yourself, you can add the template [citation needed].

This information was pretty easy to find. Obviously, it was deleted without even a simple "google". Googling the deleted sentence [1] provides the information from not only Wesson's own web page, an article from the LA Sentinel, and other sources further down the web page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phatblackmama (talk • contribs)

You misunderstand our policies regarding BLPs. I provided the relevant links on your talk page, but perhaps you didn't read them. Per WP:BLP, when material in a BLP is removed due to sourcing concerns, you need to provide include the required reliable sourcing prior to restoring it. Stating that the sources appear in a general Google search doesn't meet requirements for inclusion, the burden is on the editor wishing to restore the content to ensure the material is reliably sourced. In addition, I also directed your attention to WP:BLPNAME, which is also policy. Thanks you, Jezebel's Ponyo for explaining. I read WP:BLPNAME.

WP:BLPNAME says "The names of any immediate, former, or significant family members or any significant relationship of the subject of a BLP may be part of an article, if reliably sourced" and "names of family members who are not also notable public figures must be removed from an article if they are not properly sourced." Per WP:BLPNAME, these names that you are removing are properly sourced and therefore may be included.

I found nothing in WP:BLPNAME to support your statement "family members are generally not included in BLPs unless they are individually notable". Contrary to that, numerous California politicians listed on Wesson's page mention by name those politician's non-notable spouses and children. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Rep. Karen Bass, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, D.A. Gil Garcetti, Councilman Nate Holden.

@Phatblackmama: It is common practice that the names of family members who are not independently notable are not included in a BLP. This is done to protect their privacy. The portion of WP:BLPNAME that applies in this case is "The presumption in favor of privacy is strong in the case of family members of articles' subjects and other loosely involved, otherwise low-profile persons. The names of any immediate, former, or significant family members or any significant relationship of the subject of a BLP may be part of an article, if reliably sourced, subject to editorial discretion that such information is relevant to a reader's complete understanding of the subject (emphasis mine). As the names have been removed per WP:BLPNAME, the "subject to editorial discretion" clause of the policy kicks in. That is, the names may be included if there is consensus to do so in this specific case if you can make the argument that "such information is relevant to a reader's complete understanding of the subject". I'm not sure a full Request for Comment is necessary to determine if there is consensus to include the names of private individuals in this case; a post to Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard will probably be sufficient for feedback. On a final note, what appears in other articles has no relevance here. Wikipedia has nearly six million articles and it's impossible for volunteers to maintain consistency across all of them. What is of utmost importance to this project is that when BLP and sourcing issues do arise, we do our best to adhere to the policies in place, balancing the desire to inform readers through the inclusion of reliably sourced content with the necessity of protecting those we write about from potential harm.-- Jezebel's Ponyo^{bons mots} 17:00, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
