HSR plans announced from Bangkok to Chiang Mai -- Japan to build![edit]

I just caught this on NHK TV world service, apparently Japan will build a Shinkansen train line between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Plans were delivered to the Thai Ministry by Japan, and in three months a final decision will be made.

This is confirmation of the brief HSR info mentioned in this article.

But there no mention that the original plan for rail from China which originated from the old (pre-coup) government (I don't know if it was HSR or just regular rail) from China was scrapped due to China's offer of almost free construction in exchange for land and business rights along the track in perpetuity! This was scrapped by the current (military) govt. under clouds of corruption from the earlier govt. officials involved and the fact that Thailand does not like to give up land to foreigners. It was followed by a tracks for loans 'deal' along the same route with Engineering oversight and supervision from Japan.

Subsequently, there was a Chinese "One Belt, One Road" deal with ultra low financing by the new China 'run' and controlled AIIB bank with route and terms uncertain. This may have been back to the earlier route I mention in the paragraph immediately above, or something else.

Bottom line, lots of changes and different players in all of this.

Link to NHK on the HSR northern route follows:

Good luck!

Cost of Southern HSR[edit]

Costs of "Southern HSR" cannot be 1000 billion USD. Does anyone know a correct number? Otherwise I suggest to remove the cost entry for this specific project.--Bk1 168 (talk) 19:39, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
