"Long-standing myth" claim[edit]

Contrary to the assertion that hillside letters were not intended as signals to aircraft, the "< PHOENIX" hillside letters in Arizona (33.492°N 111.63°W) are quite clearly intended to signal aircraft, and are completely unaffiliated with a local communitiy, a school or any of the other theories put forth.

Further, there is a well-documented series of aerial signals that were built in the 1920s specifically for use by pilots flying for the US Postal Service:

However, giant hillside single initials (just "C" or whatever), unaccompanied by arrows, are not meant for airplanes. AnonMoos (talk) 16:19, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]
